Well known aviation universities in Texas?

I was just curious if anyone on here knew of any major/well known universities in Texas that has a good aviation program. I've done a fair amount of research, and anything good that I can find is out of state, like; ASU, UND, ERAU (yeah, yeah), etc. U of T doesn't have anything except an aero-engineering program (which could def. be fun), and I'd like to stay away from the 2-year programs...definitely need at least a B.A. And I really would like to do the flight training and studies at the same place, INSTEAD of the usual flight training with a FBO/independent flight school and an online degree on the side. Anyone with a little insight, your time and posts would be GREATLY appreciated!!! THANKS GUYS!!!:D
 
Embry Riddle has a few extended campuses on various military bases in TX. That won't fit your requirement of doing it all at one place. Baylor has (had) a flight program partnered with TSTC in Waco. I say had, because I haven't checked in like 6 years. Check out Southeastern Oklahoma State, in Durant. It isn't too far away from TX. One last one to check out is LeTourneau in East Texas.
 
Central Texass College has a flight program (last time i checked). Although they are a 2 yr school, they partnered with Tarleton for the 4yr degree.
 
Yeah, I knew about the TSTC deal. I just don't want to have to deal with X-ferring midway through and the like. I'm almost to the point where I'm going to just do the ASU thing. At least that way I'm not limited to just 60% of the FAA mins for funding. I'd have to pay a little out of pocket (like $30k-ish), but I'd be killing 2 birds with one stone and I've heard they have a good program. Plus, even with VA benefits and doing a program like the one Skymates has to offer, I'd be paying just as much out of pocket as I would doing the ASU thing. I have a buddy attending the university now...not aviation, but I've had him talk to a few people for me. UND looks to have a SWEEET program, but it's almost like ERAU as far as cost!!
 
It's still pretty tempting just to go through the flight training so that I could at least CFI while doing school. I really don't wanna have to wait years to make it through my CFI's...HMMMMMM...

Who says you have to? For example, in the DFW area, you could go to Mountainview Community College, join their aviation program, and get college credit for your ratings, as you take normal college classes. That is a 2 year program. If you have the funds, you can easily get all of your ratings within that 2 year time frame. From that point, you could instruct, and finish the other two years at the ERAU extended campus in Forth Worth, which is about 1/8 of the cost of the main campus.

I'll definitely look more into it. I just found out today (by making a call to the Houston campus) that they don't even offer flight training at any of the "Worldwide" campuses. I never really looked into until today, because I was always under the impression that they (ERAU) only had the two major campuses...@ like $100K for a 4-year. Then started making calls after finding out there was a campus in Houston, but none of them do flight training. Oh well. I'll definitely look into Mountainview CC. Never even heard of it...like I said, only the TSTC route was I semi-familiar with...THANKS!!

The website sucks, but basically you enroll in ground school at the college and take ground school there, and do your flight training at any flight school, (shameless plug) like Skymates here in Arlington and receive credit hours for that as well.

I go to the ERAU extended campus in Fort Worth and like it a lot. They give you credit for all of your flight training, and will take almost everything from the Mountain View program.
 
I guess I need to get in touch with that FW ERAU campus and see where all they will take credits from. Don't they offer a 4 year program as well? Why not just do that and do your flight training at some place like Skymates?
 
You can do it that way, but a community college will save you a lot of money in the long run. ERAU Fort Worth's phone is 817-737-8180
 
With ERAU, don't you have to submit all of your certificates BEFORE you enroll with them? Or can you do it as you finish them up?
 
Is any degree really just a degree with airlines? Do they really care where you got it from? And yeah I guess you're right...why not pay less and go to the comm. college, then just convert all credits over to ERAU. A lot less expensive...:D
 
If you don't mind, PM me your number...I'd like to be able to talk to someone about this. I'm getting a little too close to running out of time with all of this. If not, no worries. I get out in July. Probably end up finishing my PPL up in CO though...and would end up down in FW after that.
 
I went to southeastern. Its about 80 miles north of Dallas. 4 year degree with flight training cost me right around 40K.
 
The Airlines dont care what you have a BA in as long as you have one. I went to TSTC got a few ratings there before ATP. Im doing the UVSC deal now while I work full time it aint a bad deal
 
I will definately second the suggestion of Mountain View or the like you can really save a lot of money getting your basics done rather than at a university. When I went to UTA in mechanical engineering many of the lower level engineering courses are mated with aeronautical majors. My drafting prof designed parts on the last F-18 model. Point is you can go 4-year from the start but the community college is not to be discounted, those first everybody gots to take em' classes are no different from university than price. Dallas county schools are some of the least expensive in Texas.
