Well it's official. I'm hired. I got my letter today 6/3/05 so a little over two days and four years since my first flight lesson I have a job with a 121 "airline."
I'm currently in the hiring pool (so no class date as of yet) but they need pilots big time and captains so bad that they are trying to hire street captains.
Scenic Airlines out of North Las Vegas, NV.
They fly sceinc (ironic, eh) flights out to the Grand Canyon under full 121 regulations. They also have - and are the only operator in the nation I think to have this - 121 VFR exceptions. Meaning that they can dispatch a flight as a 121 flight under VFR rules (modified of course). However, if there is any weather they then can go "standard" IFR.
The pay isn't great - it's $13/flight hr and $6.75/ground hour (you get paid the entire time you're on duty) with a monthly minimum guarantee of $1,296. First year captains touch $35k - 40k/yr. Upgrade time are running about six to eight months (essentially as soon as you can get an ATP and 500 hours in the aircraft). THe work week is a maximum five days on two (consecutive) off. Jumpseat privies on Amwest and a few others. You also get paid while you are in training - including any breaks in training.
They fly DeHaviland Twin Otters (DHC-6s) and Beech 1900s. They have 13 +1 Twin Otters and 3 +1 1900's and about 120 pilots. The Otters go to the Canyon and the 1900s run regular scheduled service to Reno and parts of California.
I'll be sitting right seat in the "Twotter" and am looking forward to it immensely. They fly into a couple of unpaved strips and can get a lot of IMC flying in the winter. There is no type rating involved with the Twin Otter as it's max gross is 12,500 lbs. It'll be 15 hour days in the summer but it's honest, hard work and I'm sure it'll make a better pilot of me (no autopilots).
Below are a couple pics of their otters.
I am soooo stoked. It looks like there will be NO WAY I can miss NetworkJC 2005!!
If I'm working by then maybe I can swing a tour of the place for anyone who's interested.
Peace out!
