Weird things in fuel tanks

That's exactly why we don't use the big scalled plastic straws for determining how much fuel is in a tank. To many students kept dropping them in. Now it's all visual or middle finger tested.

Never heard of using the middle finger method...sounds pretty fool proof for flight training thought! I would question the practice however considering range calculations plus weight and balance for long xc's....

We had a couple guys who were replacing a component in the fuel tank while in Iraq leave a mag light in the cell, not the huge one but the one that is like 12" or so. They didnt realize it until after they did the leak check to make sure no packings or what not had been broken. So when they realized it they just told the controllers that it failed the leak check and opened the cell back up and pulled it out. Still worked too! Thank God for the military and their mandated All Tools Accounted For policy.

We've found all sorts of things under the panels where our driveshafts were, including a watch on acceptance inspetion from the factory, change, random washers/nuts, and I once left a flashlight in one and closed the panel up. Again, glad we had such strict ATAF rules.
