Watched Landings

Ironically, I pulled my best landing ever coming into Sun N Fun. Everyone must have turned the other way right before I touched down.

I felt sort of silly say "zanesville traffic, 7959G is downwind for runway that is sort of in the 180 to 220 direction."

That is HILARIOUS.

I swtiched back into the cessna yesterday for a photo mission i was flying and needed to see below me. on a long straight in final i forgot what airplane was flying and was flying my approach at 110 knots. I have been flying the arrow a ton. So, i put in flaps way before i was ready(out of white arc) and wasnt using my brain. i realized what i was doing...chopped the power and slowed to final approach speed. got down to 65 k and flared like was in the arrow....can you say, "3 pointer...bounce bounce porpoise bounce...roll out close to the grass......" By far my worst landing....ever. tower saw, as did the three planes holding short....i could only laugh.

Sorry to drag an old post up but today was the first day I saw my instructor after my goofy landing. Anyhow, he made a good point. There was a chopper hovering about 500 feet above and to the right of the runway at about midfield. It was actually flying towards me for a good deal of my approach but stopped when I was on a short final. I almost asked the tower if traffic was going to be a factor, but was too busy trying to keep my speed stable. My instructor made the point that a chopper, that close to the ground, especialy with a xwind blowing from the direction of the chopper could add some nasty rotor turbulence onto the runway. At last ! I have something to blame my bad landing on

. Well, not really. It would have been pretty bad either way, but I can begin to see how a not so good landing became a really bad one.

And THAT is the mark of a good pilot. After a totally botched landing, he must be able to find something believable to blame it on.
