Just wanted to know what other pilots do when flying to airports within the ADIZ. Called up FSS and they said that they can only creat a DVFR flight plan for KFDK and a VOR close by. My question is what if I wanted to fly from KGAI direct KIAD or KBWI. How would I get a squawk code to those class B airports? Would I have to get cleared out of the ADIZ then back in ?

My home base airports are outside of the ADIZ. What I've done in the past is call up Potomac Approach (land-line phone) prior to my departure to get my squawk code.

(This is after you file an "ADIZ flight plan" Just tell FSS after your weather briefing you need to file an ADIZ flight plan--same information as a VFR flight plan, under remarks I'll state "ADIZ.")

I'll squawk my specific code while I'm on the ramp starting up, then once airborne call up Potomac Approach ... they're expeecting me, know what code I'm squawking although I remind 'em what code I'm on, and where I'm going. Make sure to stay below Class B airspace until specifically cleared into it.

Edit* You shouldn't need to exit the ADIZ if flying to another airport inside the ADIZ.
 
Sounds kinda like what FSS in ORL would do sometimes. They won't let you file ORL-ORL or ORL-SFB without a fix in-between. I've never had to deal with ADIZ in DC, so I'm sure they have some weird rules. I know tonyw and windchill have VFR experience in the DC ADIZ system.
 
Seggy, why wouldn't you fly in the ADIZ VFR? I've flown throughout the ADIZ quite a bit while VFR (due to the fact that I don't have an instrument ratings contributes

A couple of reasons.

I have done a fair share of flying down in the area and I just would not be comfortable with the procedure they have in place. I just think to much can go wrong to get busted.

I was at a WINGS session last week. The FAA dudes were saying they average four busts A DAY in the ADIZ! To many variables I am not comfortable with.
 
On 4 busts a day, how many of those are legit threats to security and how many are Sunday pilots that either forgot a strayed a bit too far? Yeah, that's what I thought. Ya think if they get that many false alerts they might realize it's cutting into the whole freedom thing. Either that, or they're starting a collection of nabbed pilot licenses in DC and this is how they get them.....

It is easy to file an ADIZ flight plan from one airport in the ADIZ to another inside the ADIZ. Remember, you can't leave the ground inside the ADIZ without squawking first! You MUST pick up your squawk on the ground! That being said, an ADIZ squawk code does not automatically clear you into the Class "B". I operate in the ADIZ on a daily basis (based here as a CFI), flying mostly VFR. If you know the rules & follow them, flying in the ADIZ is burdensome but not that bad. However if you are not familiar, or get lax in your awareness, you can get in trouble!

Seggy, trust me, it ain't that bad. Get a squawk and talk to ATC and that's all you have to do.

So, let's say you're flying through the ADIZ but you got flight following and put an ADIZ plan on file. Guess what? You're talking to ATC, have a squawk, and you're good to go.

It's more lack of action that causes busts than anything else.
 
Having flown extensively in the area for about a week, there's nothing extremely tricky about the DC ADIZ. Just file your ADIZ FP (a key I received from FSS one day was do not say VFR ADIZ plan, since, especially surrounding states, may put it in as a pure VFR and ATC won't get it), Squawk your code, and talk to ATC. Just make sure you stay out of the FRZ (Flight Restricted Zone) around National. It takes a lot of special approval and 3 phone calls for each flight into the FRZ.

They (Potomac Approach) tried to get me one day. My copilot switched our transponder to 1200 once we were cleared for the visual approach into Davison Army Airfield. I was flying a Military aircraft on a Military flight plan into a Military field ... being handled by ATC all the way and on a six mile final my copilot made an honest mistake, yet Potomac Approach insisted on the violation ... After a few You got to be kidding me and the controller still insisting I give him my name and Pilot's Cet. # ... I finally asked him if he was familiar with the procedure to vilotate a Military flight crew, when he answered he was I told him to have a nice day and hung up on him. Its been a year and I haven't heard a thing ... but I did get sent to the desert for 7 months.
Bottom line is whether VFR or IFR maintain your assigned squawk.

Good point! Potomac is really good though (they have been with me) by saying once I have a visual on the airport (when inside the ADIZ) ... "services terminated, frequency change approved, maintain squawk code."
