Can someone help me understand what part 141 or part 61, etc means? Is it a training curriculum that is geared in a specific direction like corporate aviation for example?

61 is FBO
141 structured school such as a ATP.
91 is General Operating and Flight Rules
135 is charter stuff (commuter and on demand)
121 is airline

61 is FBO

Commonly. However, there are FBOs who have part 141 training programs.

141 structured school such as a ATP.

Except that ATP trains under part 61, not 141. However, PGT is correct that part 141 is more rigidly structured than part 61. If you're using VA benefits to pay for training, then you have to go to a school which uses part 141 curriculum.

"Parts" refers to parts of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Pick yourself up a copy of the FAR (available on line or at most pilot shops) for $10-$12 and look things up. You can also look them up on the FAA website.

Part 141 is stuctured training. Theses programs are usually associated with Colleges such as Riddle, Western Michigan, Purdue, etc. The also allow you to qualify for checkrides faster by allowing you to take those rides with lower time than if you trained at a part 61 school (most flight schools).

Don't think you will actually be ready for your checkride at the reduced times. The majority of people do not take their checkrides at the minimum hours required.

Also, think long and hard about going to a 141 school. They typically cost more and the educuation is comperable to a good part 61 school.

If you have any specific question send me a PM. I graduated from a 141 school and taught at a part 61 school before going to the airlines.

IMO the best way to go is get a degree outside of aviation and train at good part 61 school to maximize your $$$

Thank you for correcting me! I was in a hurry so just threw them together.

But yea get a FAR/AIM, it's like the aviation bible.

Second that...If you plan on getting into aviation, or already are, you need to get the FAR/AIM and study it like it is your new religion!

Part 61 is the Part of the FAA regulations that govern pilot certificates, ratings, privileges an currency. With regard to instruction toward pilot certificates and ratings, it sets out fairly specific requirements for what must be covered and, to some degree, when. Within those parameters, it's fairly flexible, and all that's required is a willing student, a willing instructor, and an airplane.

141 is the Part of the regulations that controls certain types of flight schools. In exchange for FAA supervision, approval of the program, and strictly following an approved syllabus, the school can offer somewhat reduced requirements. For both the student and the school, the program is structured with a formal syllabus, including phase checks by a senior instructor, that "must" be followed.

Aside from the extremes of both is a lot of variety. There are small Part 141 programs. There are Part 61 programs that follow the same syllabus and structure as a Part 141 school.

What they are "geared for" is more a function of the school and how it sees itself than which Part it provides instruction under.
