VOR Checks

Yes VOR Checks, hardly any of us use them anymore but the FAA says we must check them every 30 days for legal IFR flight. As we know all they Require for the check is Date, Place, Bearing Error, and Signature written somewhere and in the aircraft. The discussion has come up today about VOR checks in my company, and I have always had an "issue" with the way we record checks, while the check we do is 100% legal there isnt much info.

Example:

Current

Date Place Type VOR1 VOR2 Signature
2/10/14 XYZ Dual +- 0 +-0 Joe Pilot

I propose

Date Place Type VOR1 VOR2 DIFFERENCE Signature
2/10/14 XYZ Dual 090 To 091 To +1 Joe Pilot

Both are perfectly legal, given my way it shows what radials were used and the difference between them. Our current way just says + or - and doesn't give what radials were used at all.

So just kinda curious how do you or your company record VOR checks?

Nothing in the reg says you have to or need to record the radial(s) just the bearing error, if any. Ours is

Date VOR/VOR Type(Air, ground, VOT) Bearing Error Signature

It's just a check to verify your nav source(s) are accurate and a "legal" way to show you actually did the check. If for whatever reason they are out of tolerance the radials would be useful for MX possibly.

According to 91.171(c)

(c) If dual system VOR (units independent of each other except for the antenna) is installed in the aircraft, the person checking the equipment may check one system against the other in place of the check procedures specified in paragraph (b) of this section. Both systems shall be tuned to the same VOR ground facility and note the indicated bearings to that station. The maximum
permissible variation between the two indicated bearings is 4 degrees.

To me, saying "note" I would record that bearing. But I guess it's all about the interpretation of "note"

I think you're over thinking this.

IMO, you can't do a +/- on a dual VOR check, as you are comparing the difference between the two, not the difference each is showing relative to the bearing selected.

I know I'm over thinking this and the interpretation. I'm curious to see how others record VOR checks.

For the record; mine are recorded in the log book at least every 30 days IAW the appropriate regulation.

Technically, if you've got a TSO-146/146a GPS, you shouldn't have to do a VOR check, since you have no legal requirement to have a VOR.
