Volunteer Opportunities?

Boots2Wings

Just happy to be here.
Hey folks,
After scouring the web for answers as per usual, our niche field yields few results. I will spare you the details of why I want to do this,
however, I was wondering if you guys knew of any charitable organizations that need part time pilots (1-3 days a month) for their missions?
Outside of the obvious Angel Flight or Veterans Airlift Command, I can find relatively few, and all with one major hurdle....providing an aircraft on your own.
Now, I do fine, but certainly not well enough to support renting an aircraft for several hours a month, and since my finances limit my ability to contribute that way, I feel that I can at very least attempt to use my skills and experience. I keep good insurance, since I still CFI on the side, so that isn't an issue, it really is just the aircraft part that is the deal breaker. As far as qualifications, 135 current, 2.4k TT, 1000 TPIC, all the other usual mins.

Any leads would be appreciated!

Thanks

Without renting or owning your own plane your options are limited. The only thing I can think of is hooking up with someone who owns a plane or split the rental fee with someone. Wings of Mercy requires two pilots for their missions, so this might be a possibility.

I've been doing PnP and Wings of Mercy flights for the last 10 years. They're very rewarding and pushed me to start my own nonprofit.

Civil Air Patrol? Volunteer, they have airplanes, they could use you as a CFI to sign off other pilots 1 to 3 days a month would be about right. Might take part in some cool missions. CAP can be a little weird sometimes, it really depends on the unit.

Another option is look at the Coat Guard Auxiliary, depending on where you are at. A lot of their members have planes ( at least where I looked, in Monterey.)

Yea i talked with them today actually, and while a lot of it seems great, not sure I want to go back "into uniform"...so its something I'm mulling over.
And I'm SLC based, so highly doubt Coast Guard is near haha.

Unless things have changed you can elect to participate in that organization with out wearing a uniform. Granted it has been many many years, but there were members who wore a golf shirt and pants.

Good, I will have to ask...I'm rather fond of not shaving regularly and skipping workouts regularly :)

Years ago the Shriners had "The Flying Fez" which would transport kids to various Shriners hospitals for treatment. I am not sure if they are still doing that or not, and I'm not sure if you have to be a Shriner anymore. There was a guy at KDWH where I misspent my 14-21 ages and he had an absolutely perfect Comanche. He was a Shriner and a "Flying Fez" and would transport kiddos to the burn hospital in Galveston from all over south and central TX. Had a brief hiccup with his medical so I flew with him in the right seat a couple of times. Really a worthwhile mission. I'm not sure they still do it, but if they do I imagine those guys are getting pretty long in tooth and a situation may arise where they need or want someone to act as PIC or just a safety-type pilot. They had a cool logo - a fez with wings.
