Virgin America hiring pilots

I don't doubt it. I just heard that 9 of our CAs have PRIA requests out along with some FOs. If a PRIA request is processing that means they have already interviewed somewhere, gotten the thumbs up, and are waiting for the conditional offer - on passing the PRIA and background checks.

I know of 2 FOs. But would not doubt more. I just remember last year when I got the email about no more classes and interviews, I thought that was not going to last.

VX is hiring again and as of right now the application window is open online. 24 newhires Jan-April. Planning on another 12 or so later in the year. Initial estimate of 36 minimum newhires but more likely we will hire more. Currently we have ~ 620 pilots for 53 planes. Getting 5 new A320s this year and 5 more for 2016. The IPO happened in December ('14) and has done very well for investors. It seems VX is more financially sound than before. Newhires can expect NYC and SFO as a base.

Are you close to upgrade?

No. We stagnated growth in the 3rd quarter of 2012 and since then have taken only one delivery in March 2013. I'll be 3 years next month and am ~ 494 out of 620ish. Most junior CA around 338. I still have ways to go. The current growth plan calls for 5 planes this year, 5 for 2016, and then 30 for 2020-2022. But now that we're public there are rumors of a steady growth plan for 2017-19 (which currently stands at 0 deliveries). If that changes then things will move up.

If you don't mind, in round numbers, what did your w4 look like last year?

95907.xx gross for flight pay, bonuses, etc. And plus 5987.xx for non-tax per diem. So about 102k total for the year.

Keep in mind this does include about a one time 2,200 payout for IPO. And keep in mind there aren't really any soft rules. If you wanna be paid well you are gonna fly. 2014 was 910 hours. 2013 was 918 hrs. This is by choice, I could have just bid 70 hrs credit per month and let it be.

Any info on what kind of times are getting interviews?

At the moment the pool is being drained out to fill classes. The interviews should start soon. The mins are ATP and 2,500 hrs so as long as you have that I would apply if interested. When the mins switched to 4,000 hrs I applied and was hired with ~4,140. So I don't see why someone couldn't get hired at 2,500.

Unfortunately I don't know how long it might take. I would imagine it partially depends on just how quickly the pool is drained out. I know one guy had a Feb class date that was shifted up to a Jan date so it does sound like they are going through the pool quickly. Keep in mind that these folks were hired last year and some of them were swimming for over one year. People won't wait forever and if another legacy or LCC calls, they would accept it. That's another reason the pool should be depleting quickly. And even after they fill all scheduled classes, VX still keeps a pool of pilots at least 12 guys or so, just in case they need to get a class going with a 2-week notice.

Good to know, How are things there overall? and what are the chances at a NYC base right out of training? All the NYC airports would be a fairly easy commute for me.

NYC out of training is a possibility. SFO and NYC are doable but LAX is tougher. Things are ok overall, it really depends where on the seniority list one is for perspective. Reserve isn't the best but it's still better than others out there. 13 days off per month and 75hr guarantee and no picking up opentime. Short call and long call. Short is 2 hrs for SFO and LAX and 3 hrs for NYC. Long call is 12 hrs and of course more senior.

Cool, Thanks for the info

Applied again this week. 3600TT, 180TPIC, 3 regional types, 1 internal rec. Who knows if Ill receive a call. Pretty crap timing if I do receive a call, supposed to start class with TSA in 2 weeks.

We had at least 2 guys at CommutAir swimming in the VX pool. But I believe 1 of the 2 has already taken a job somewhere else and didnt plan on going to VX when called anymore.

We just had a newhire class here at VX of 4 pilots and it's already down to 3. Not sure where the pilot went, but if AA/DL/UA called him then it's just business and nothing personal. My humble opinion I'd leave TSA as a newhire for any LCC/Major/Legacy.
