How long after the proposed time of departure do you have to open up your flight plan before it is erased from the system?

I can't remember if it is an hour or half an hour. :insane:

Half hour for search and rescue release (after ETA). Erased an hour after you proposed departure if not activated. (Don't quote me on the erased part, but I know it is at least an hour) Confirmation anyone?

Can't speak to VFR flightplans not put through ATC but any flight plan in the ATC system expires 2 hrs after the proposed departure time.(can be changed but that is the standard)

One hour. Also, when you file your flight plan, I recommend giving them your cell phone or destination phone number every time. You don't want the SAR guys heading out to look for you if you're just sipping coffee in the pilot's lounge.

FSS will call the tower/FBO at the field you were filed to, or local law enforcement to go check the ramp. If you're not there, they check airports in the vicinity then call in CAP (cue Magnificent Seven music) who will do a route search (grid search if a known target exists.)...
