Veteran thinking about ASU, UND...Need info

I am new to the forum and had some questions for anyone that is using the new GI Bill and going to ASU or UND. I am leaning towards ASU, as I am an Arizona resident and have family that lives in Phoenix. I just wanted to get some information from anyone that is there. At ASU, what are the ratings that are received in the program? Is the whole cost of the program covered by the post 9/11 GI Bill? Approximately how many hours should I expect to get while in the program? I noticed that they switched to ATP instead of Mesa, how is that? I have a friend in the same situation I am in that is going to UND about a year before I will be there, UND's program seems to be really good and is completely covered financially. Also UND offers additional ratings like tailwheel, seaplane, and aerobatic, does ASU offer that? There is quite a bit of information on here and the internet about UND, but not so much on ASU, should I expect the same quality of training and airplanes as UND? Thanks for the help and look forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

UND certainly has my recommendation, however the special ratings you mentioned (tailwheel, seaplane, aerobatic, etc.) are "extras" that are not required by any of the aviation degree programs, which means that the GI Bill typically won't cover the classes and flight training associated with those.

I had a GI bill student who wanted all sorts of additional training...he somehow built a custom degree plan that included all the flight courses he wanted as required courses. Don't know how easy it is to do, but it's been done at least once.

I used my gi bill for all my flight training at und. As far as the tail wheel, acro, seaplane, or even helicopter extra are all covered. When getting your degree you will need elective credits and you can do all these courses under that. Or under your own program of study.

I used this at und to receive all my training and the gi bill paid for all of it.

Good responses. Since I already came in with a degree, I didn't need any elective courses so I was out of luck with tailwheel classes, etc... but if someone is starting from the beginning, it sounds like you can get them to count as electives. I recommend taking a look at the UND catalog and speaking with an academic advisor to see how you could work it out.

I also had my degree and still had no issues making sure my program of study included all the classes I wanted to take. It's all about how you ask the question. Or in my situation, how I worded what I needed to do. I made it part of my degree so it was required.

Just be careful out there. I was a year into my school and the school changed their Fee payment policy which resulted in their flight fees no longer being covered by the VA at all. Even though the Degree program REQUIRES you to get 3 licenses at their school they consider flight fees to be optional. So I had to scramble and change my major. So beware of that. MGIB pays Tuition first and fees last. That leaves the Yellow Ribbon to pick up the rest. Yellow Ribbon requires the School to match $:$. Since the school stopped matching the VA stops paying for their half. Check out RedBird Skyport down in San Marcos, TX. They should be getting their VA approval this Nov. They are a new kind of flight school that uses full motion flight simulators as much as possible to reduce training costs. It also speeds up training. I recommend you get a business or management degree to have something to fall back on. Make sure you find out from the current vets at the school if they are covering flight fees. Good luck.

I went to ASU when it was Mesa Pilot Development. That marriage ended not too long ago you are correct that the training is now done by ATP. I personally loved going to ASU but I also lived in Tempe, enjoyed all the spoils of college and commuted out the IWA just to fly and attend the classes that are on that campus. Like I said, I loved ASU but more for the non flying experience. I honestly don't know any of the details regarding current cost or what the GI bill does or doesn't cover. Your best bet would probably be to pick up the phone and call the flight department and they would have all that info. My advice would be, if you're looking for a great college experience, ASU is the best around. But if you're just looking to get in, get your flying done and move on, then just find the flight school that is the cheapest/covered most by the GI bill.
