Vermont F-35 woes

Maybe just a tale, but I’ve heard the the F-15 is technically one of the quietest aircraft in the inventory. Accelerate, point nose straight up, and keep accelerating. The noise footprint stays small.

I've heard some rumblings that the F-35 has an offensive noise, it's not the volume that irks folks in close proximity it's the tone. Some things can be very loud but it doesn't hurt, some things can be not quite as loud and still make you want to tear your ears off of your head. Have you ever heard an AV-8B hovering? They did that once at the Van Nuys Airshow, there was complaints from 10 miles away. No more hover dance for you. I can recall changing an engine on a Lear 28, our hangar was fairly close to the blast fence, probably 300 yards. Me and my buddy jumped in to take it out to the fence and do our operational checks, 20 series Lears are offensively loud, the engines are very petite so to make that much power the volume is off the scale but the tone is the real problem, especially with a CJ610-8. It took us about an hour to run through everything (35-40 minutes of that was probably at full power) and when we pulled back onto our ramp as we shut it down in front of the hangar everyone in the hangar gathered in front of the airplane and started applauding. This was not a sign of respect, they would've killed us had we immediately opened the door and jumped out with smiles on our faces, they were just expressing their displeasure and sarcastically thanking us for making the noise stop. I thought I heard something about the F-35B being used on carriers as a tanker being very unpleasant to refuel from, or maybe it was the F-18?

I have great memories of C-5’s flying into Riyadh. Loved how they would coast in before coming back on the power on final. Sound of freedom.

The interesting thing is regarding this, is that I would’ve figured nearby Luke AFB, which traded its F-16 training for F-35 training a number of years back; would’ve gotten all kinds of noise complaints, especially from the large Sun City retirement community. But either those complaints aren’t happening, or if they are happening, they aren’t being reported in the news. Of course, many of the locals with ties know how their bread is buttered, and might not complain about noise anyway.

This wad of 324 noise complaints is five miles away from the departure end of the runway and one mile off the extended centerline.

Bonors.

F-35’s can’t tank.

Well it can, it just can only be the receiver. Which reminds me of a story I was involved with when one of the operational test F-35’s had a $6M tanker related mishap in my flight (I led this airplane back into the break at the boat on my wing, without knowing)
