Here is the deal. I recently enrolled for the spring semester at UVSC but I have yet to enroll in any classes because I found a problem

for challenging credits regarding your flight ratings you can only challenge and recieve credits for ratings recieved prior to enrollment at UVSC.

the big problem here is I still have to finish both commercials and all instructor ratings, which will not be done until April of this year. If I enroll I will only get credit for the few ratings I already have and would not be able to recieve the credits for the other ratings and have to take the 8 classes that coincide with the ratings. That is alot of unnecessary work over a semesters worth.

So.......what are my options...how do i "disenroll" from UVSC so I can skip this semester and finish my ratings and then enroll again to get the appropriate credit for my ratings? Is this even possible? What about other options? Money is not really a huge concern because I have the MGIB from the military and it should cover the remainder of my degree (within reason and providing they accept my transfer credits and ratings) After adding up all of my previous credits and future credits for ratings I will have around 85 or so credits remaining on my degree and after flight training around $18,000 or more on my GI Bill left which will give me a little over 200 per credit which covers most schools .

Can I do what I am trying to do at UVSC or are there other options? The only criteria...100% online and not too difficult, I need a check in the box not a degree in rocket science.

I'm not sure if I am understanding you right and there are a lot of other people that could help you better, but if I did understand the problem, you are saying you take a flight class but won't pass because you didn't do the rating w/ it right? If that's the problem, you simply take the class, get an incomplete or something I think, and then when you do get the rating, you take it to the school and they change the grade to complete. At least that's what my husband did. So you can do the classes ahead of time and get them out of the way and do the ratings later and still get all proper credit. Sorry if that wasn't what you were asking.
 
Thats the problem with UVSC, you cannot disenroll, I tried over and over to get my credits challenged, but to no avail. E-mail a suggestion to the president of UVSC, He is a very friendly guy, and does try to help his students out. Maybe that will work.
 
I do know UVSC hates helo pilots. It may seem like a lot of work to take the classes but trust me they are uber easy. I think I start working on the classes about a week before the semester ends and I do pretty well at them.

The problem I have is for the BS in aviation some of the required classes are commercial multi and single engine, instrument rating and electives are all of your instructor ratings.

Coinciding with the CMEL,CSEL, INST, CFI, CFII, MEI ratings are 8 college classes that are required by UVSC to graduate. If you already posess those ratings prior to enrolling then you do NOT have to take the 8 classes, you are granted credits for your previous experience.

I am working on these ratings, however, I will not be done until April of this year so I will have to take all 8 of those classes since I am already enrolled prior to completing my ratings. Not a huge deal but a pain since If I had known I would have waited to enroll, finished my ratings, attended local community college and done a few gen-eds and then applied to UVSC for the summer semester and recieved all of those credits, skipping 8 useless classes.

Hopefully it makes as much sense to you guys as it does in my head..its hard to explain.

Now what?

are all colleges like this? Does ERAU have an online program where I can recieve credits? UND? Other?

I did not see this part...that is looking like it may be my only option...take two 20 credit semesters and catch up
 
Enrolling for the the rating classes and getting credit is very easy. For the ground portions all you have to provide is a copy of your written tests and take a "practice test" based on the written test. For the flight portions all you have to do is fax in a copy of your certificate or paperwork showing you completed them. The "work load" is very minimal. If you already have the ratings then I would think you could easily get them all done in a n hour or two of taking the tests.
EDIT: UVSC is the kind of place where you just have to talk to the right person, it is just one big bureaucracy. My mother worked there for several years and quit because she had a different boss every semester.

Who did you talk to? Try calling Gloria Schnieder. She is one of the counselors and she has been amazing for me in getting things sorted out. Call her at 801-863-7836.
 
SGT, I actually had the same problem as you are going through. I decided to just enroll in the courses and take them while I was doing my training. Since I was already half way through my Commercial Multi, I already knew the information and blasted right through the classes. I enrolled in College while I was in Afghanistan, just to keep me busy!! The classes are fairly simple and you should not have to spend much time on the electives. What about the BA requirements though? Such as the ATC, Aviation Management, High Altitude Nav. ect? Regardless if you have all of your ratings I believe you must take all of them, correct?
While I am talking about this, Do you have the Federal Tuition Assistance, or State Tuition Assistance? Are you title 32 Active duty? Im in the Guard and can help you with that if you qualify.

thanks for the replies, I will probably just take the classes instead of sitting out a semester. I will also call Gloria and see what she can do. Airborne, I am currently still on active so I am going to be using my tuition assistance and then as soon as I get out and have finished the remainder of my ratings (april) I will be done using the VA for flight training and will conveniently be just in time to start using my MGIB for summer 07 semester and on since you can not use the MGIB for flight training and school simultaneously
 
Have you looked into Riddle's Pro Aero degree? It is completely online and they will credit your ratings, post admission. Tuition is only $190/hr and you will get 36 hours credit for the comm/multi.
 
My hard earned UVSC advice is that if you are going to challege credits (and pay the 1/2 off rate for them) be sure you are going to get your degree there, as the challeged credits dont transfer!! Also, the classes are rediculously easy, I did a whole semister in 3 days sitting on the couch with my laptop and watching TV.
 
I am also going to look into ERAU because everyone talks about how expensive they are but they are 40 per hour more per credit hour..that is not a huge amount but we will see, I may stick with UVSC.

Andrew, if I start there I will finish there and easy is good for me, as cheezy as it sounds I am not looking to prove myself in the academic department, a completed degree will be just fine. At 25 years old, Married, on my own for 8 years, working 60 hours per week, flight training 40 hours per month, 4 years in the Marines and two deployments I am really not looking for another challenge. I actually smile when people tell me how easy it is.

The UVSC online classes are pretty easy, especially if you already have the rating. So far I have only considered "Flight environment" hard, and that because it was a ton of busy work that didnt jive with the whole online "at your own pace" concept. 18 credit hours a semester is pretty cake if you just stay on top of them. Two more semesters and I am done!
 
The aviation core classes, as others have said, are really easy. It's the gen-ed instructors that seem like they have something to prove by making life unbearably miserable that really ticks me off. It still isn't that bad if you mix the core classes with gen-ed, life will be much more difficult if you wait to take those last.

I hear you there, good luck. Ive always said "a degree is a degree," shaking my head at my friends paying $30k+ a year. If I could do it over again I would have done the whole degree online, while working full time flying. I would have saved/made alot more money, and would have a greater sense of accomplishment. My "easy" experience with UVSC is for the flying courses only (aviation law + flight and ground licence classes).

I'm sure the "real" classes are harder, my experiance with my states online community college classes is what scared me away from doing the whole thing online. I find it easier to sit and absorb info mindlessly in class than motivate myself to "goto class" virtually at home.

The UVSC general ed courses are not near as good as the aviation ones. UVSC main campus has for years had an inferiority complex being so close to BYU. Most of the professors make life much more difficult than it needs to be, online or in person. The math department is the worst, closely followed by biology. They still wont let you use a calculator for math. If you have the option, I would highly recommend taking general classes elsewhere and transfer them.
 
If you dont want a challenge, then by all means do the UVSC program. Ive done both and am currently doing mine through Embry Riddle. UVSC was an absolute joke. It is by no means a college level program. At least look into Embry just because of your military service. They gave me at least 14 hours from mine. I did all of my general ed stuff at Irvine Valley College when I got out, so I dont know about UVSC's general ed classes, but the aviation stuff was a waste of my time and most importantly money. Embry is definately more of a challenge and it doesnt make me feel like I am throwing away money. I went in with only a private license to UVSC, so with having to pay for instrument-CFI classes, the $40 an hour difference in tuition actually made Embry Riddle cheaper by a G. Good luck!
