USS Oriskany air ops, 1970

Were the VAK squadrons only in the Reserves?
Yes. VAK-208 and VAK-308 were reserve squadrons. As was VAQ-1020.

When they stripped the EW gear (EKA-3B's back to KA-3B's), they became VAK squadrons.

VAQ-1020 had no aircraft, but was fully staffed, using 208 and 308 aircraft. It was decommissioned before 208 and 308 became VAK.

KA-6's were integrated into VA squadrons.

When I was home last year, I met up with a kid from my home town who was about to head off to OCS and then flight school. Got talking at the bar about flying, BS stories, etc etc. Very nosy and pushy older man helps himself to the seat on the other side of me, and starts telling us about the skies over Vietnam, limping home with combat damage, and going to TOP GUN. Something doesn't add up about his stories, so I ask a few specific questions. One of them, oddly enough, was purely out of curiosity at that point, whether he flew off 27C's (yeah, I guess I am that much of a dork). He had never heard of one. Of course he also had no knowledge of just basic ops out of Miramar, Oceana, Key West or Fallon.....not that I grilled him or anything, guy just couldn't keep up the banter once specifics came out. For a former Phantom guy, I'd imagine those places would live on in vivid memories for the rest of one's life....I know they will for me at least. Anyway, random segue, just made me think of that.

I think that guys like that fail to realize how much things stay the same over the course of decades. If somebody wants to tell me their story more than they want to hear mine, there's often an issue.

I think I knew what a 27 Charlie was when I was eight, so you are not alone.
