US to Hire 12,000 Air Controllers Over 10 Yrs -WSJ

[ QUOTE ]

Well sooner or later there is bound to be a shortage because the vast majority of the Reagan folks are getting old. If I'm a passenger, I don't want my life in the hands of a bunch of senior citizens.

Well nevermind that the pilot flying the plane also responsible if not more so for passenger safety could be 60. Thats three years older then the mandatory ATC retirement age.

The onlt aspect of ATC I am worried about is dealing with going froma high salary with a secure job, to a low-paying uncertain job. But this low-paying uncertain job is my dream. I want a way of haiving an income while I prepare for a flying job. It is overwhelming how hard it is to make decisions.

Just be prepared to put in alot of man hours as an ATC (especially as a low-ranking ATCS). You will need to build flight time of course if you decide to make the switch. I have two personal friends who fly for XJT who were controllers prior to their flying job and both told me it was a very difficult jump to make, but the main reason they switched was because the ATC career didn't float their boat, not because they were using it as a stop gap to become a pilot

I think we're getting a little hypothetical dude, but just a friendly heads up
