US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructors

gymhaus

Rockin out with my chocks out
US Aviation will be hiring 19 new instructors over the next 6 weeks. Because I got the job from looking at a post on here a few months ago, I figured I would pay it forward and repost now that they are hiring a lot again.

Requirements:
CFI
CFII
Under 200 lbs. (lots of C152 flying)
Professional and knowledgeable

I recommend applying and then calling within a day to try to schedule an interview.
They also have a new base in Hondo, TX as well as Sherman, TX if that interest anyone, I think they are hiring for those too. Recently they doubled in size so there will be lots of students and lots of flying involved!

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

Just a quick warning: Flight Instructing out there is intense, to say the least. I know many guys who couldn't handle it, and they seem to have a high turnover rate for their instructors. I instructed there this past year, and you literally have 3 to 4 (depending on the day) different bosses who keep track of your every movement and every hour flown/not flown. There are many things they do better than the other flight school I instructed at...but US Flight Academy is not for everyone.

Just a fair "heads up" for those considering applying. Oh, and MX is also a major issue since their fleet is so old. Don't let the fresh paint on the 152s fool you. I know personally I could barely ever get a flight in on the 172s since they were always down for one reason or another. Multiple times I would get all the way to the runup area in a 172 only to have to phone DTO tower on my cell phone requesting taxi back because the radios went out. Other times the engine would completely fail during the runup.

Again, I'm not trying to put out horror stories. Only providing some perspective from somebody who has been there and done that.

The engine would just quit on runup...wow.

You will be busy and you will be monitored, but I honestly feel you don't create a completely accurate picture. Many things have improved since USFA first started their massive expansion, and while it was shaky at first, I believe they are slowly becoming a much more solid company to work for.

Concerning MX, yes most of their planes are older and do have their issues, but I was there for about two years and never had any of the above listed problems. Not to say they didn't happen, because I know they did, just that it doesn't occur with the frequency you make it sound. They have added much newer 172's, although they still have the original older models you remember.

I'm not attacking you or saying your experience was wrong, because I know where you are coming from, I'm just offering another perspective.

Fair. Like I said, I am providing some perspective based on my time there. I do understand they were and are going through some growing pains which is why I actually left out MANY more negatives that I could have posted.

However, let me add that I never felt completly safe within a 10nm radius of DTO...especially in the pattern. In a span of 3 months I had 4 near misses in mid-air with another aircraft. Compare that to my 3 years flying out of KADS when I had NONE. Granted, DTO has NO radar...but I heard they may install one soon, or may already have. If so that would help. For those who don't know, on a typical day the pattern at DTO becomes completly saturated with USFA aircraft doing touch&gos, not to mention another handful holding at the OM and/or doing practice approaches. As far as airport operations go, DTO is busier than KADS and KDAL combined all because of USFA aircraft doing touch & gos.

I actually heard, for the first and only time in my life a controller flip out over the radios while in the DTO pattern one day. In the dead heat of July, while it's a nice 110 degrees outside...it seemed as if every Chinese and Indian student was out solo in the pattern. Most of them had less than stellar English and were missing calls, understanding instructions incorrectly, and making their own radio calls very hard to understand. Finally the guy in the tower screamed, " There are too many people in the pattern who DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH!" He proceeded to reject anymore touch & go operations (there were 4 more USFA aircraft in the runup) made all inbound aircraft hold their posistions where ever they were, and landed 6 aircraft he deemed as "non-English profecient".

Meanwhile, I happened to be on downwind when all of that went down. Unable to get a word in edgewise, and the controller on the verge of a mental break down I had to break out of the pattern since he completely forgot about me. I announced 3 times that I would be holding to the west of the airport at 2,000 feet. Sure enough, I had to dive for my life when a 172 came straight at me.

That same 172 ( the red and white one) also missed my wing by no more than 20 feet once when we were BOTH told to fly to the water tower inbound to DTO. Of course, we both get there at the same time with me slightly higher than him. The only reason I was even slightly higher is because I took that initiative, after not being able to spot him and knowing we were both coming in at the same altitude I had my student climb a little "just in case". Had I not, we would have collided at an angle as we both converged on the same spot at the same time.

What resulted pretty much had me sure that this was not worth $15 an hour plus everything else we had to put up with out there. Again, I hope things do get better for them but I can't recommend working there based on my experiences.

Oh, and I talked to the instructor in the 172 that almost hit us when we got on the ground. He had no clue. He never saw us, neither did Brenda in the tower.

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

neither did Brenda in the tower.

That doesn't surprise me.

When I left they had just installed the radar so that improved things dramatically. But you aren't kidding, that airspace was a zoo.

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

i second everything CFIscare just said. LOL. With aviation you got to take things with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a perfect flight school, but I honestly feel USAviation is one of the better one's, but then again, I came after they expanded and fixed many problems you mentioned

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

Approximately how many hours a month are you guys billing out?

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

It's a tough gig and that's all I'll say about it.
I believe the last couple months the average has been around 60 hrs flight time a month. My best month was just over 200 billed an my worst was 50...
Depends on what u do for the company...

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

Also you might want to brush up on your chinese....Bwahaha

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

I have a interview on monday and was trying to figure out financially if i could make enough to pay the bills here. What is the pay per hour?

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

I have a college contact I spoke to when I moved to the area that works there... If I remember right I think he said starting was $15/hr with baby-steps up per every 200ish or so hours dual given with the company. I could be mistaken, but thats what I recall.

Correct.

Unless they have changed it, it wasn't dual given but hours billed, including ground, brief time, sim, etc.

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

FWIW, I've heard both extremes about these guys. 2 people I know personally couldn't stand working there and quit, while another guy on this board was fired for a totally BS reason. There are however one or 2 people on the board who also vouch for US Aviation every time a job opening comes up. So caveat interviewee I guess, I tend to trust the people I went to school with and their view of things over what random people on the innerwebz say.

Re: US Aviation in Denton TX, hiring 19 new flight instructo

US Aviation has its place unfortunately. While some may disagree, most of us on these boards come here to talk aviation and help each other for the good of the profession; we see it how it is and inform other new JC'ers. As a former employee, I do not agree with many of their practices. My observation was the ability to take advantage of the self examination authority and the lack of care for the employees. That was more than enough for me. A special DTO woman tower controller had a freak out, caused many problems, and after 2 close calls in one week I have written off that airport entirely. Case and point, US Aviation will continue to exist as long as they have instructors who teach there and put up with the low quality of pilots turned out and management BS. The only thing they care about is the bottom dollar, not you (taken from my past experiences). I hope things have changed but I doubt they have. There place in the aviation community as far as I see is this; for a new or struggling instructor it is a great place to build time. Do expect anything more.

I am glad however that we can finally get some money back from China. Unfortunately the pilots US Aviation sends them is like the items they send us...crap. If anything I was more disappointed in the fact that we handed these certificates out, not the pay or poor QOL.
