US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking planes

Yikes. Of note is the $2 charge for beverages (first in the majors I believe) and they are canceling leases on 2 A330's that were to be used for international destinations. They also delayed their China route. They just don't seem to have any international structure worth a darn, I think that will be there downfall.

Any job leads in the RDU area???

woah, a major charing for soda?

never heard of that

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

Yeah, the majors are slowly going the way of the a la carte airlines such as Allegiant and (gasp) Skybus.

That Millennium Hotel van service...:)

Seriously, I think "the writing on the wall" will be inscribed for us if/when they file BK. Either the courts will cut their throats (which they haven't done for F9 yet, and it's been a couple months), or our contract will become void and they'll shed us if/when they reduce regional lift.

Lot's of if's and when's, but if networked appropriately, this could be an opportunity in and of itself.

AMR tried the pay-for-beverage thing on Eagle out of LAX a few years ago.

It failed miserably and got horrible feedback from both pax and crews.

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

This is in no way, shape or form justifying the move because I think it's a little boneheaded, but I think what's going on is that they probably have heavy loads this summer, but those seats are already sold before the operating costs (fuel) skyrocketed and there's no method of generating additional incremental income to compensate for the higher operating costs. So the charging for bags and soda thingy provide additional income now from pax that "bought in" when costs were lower.

Survival of the fittest these days, the fun's just beginning.

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

Just my opinion, but I think the 300+ furloughs that were in the announcement are a little bit more important.

Best of luck to those pilots who will be on the street.

Well so did charging for the first bag, yet they've held their ground, and now US Air and UAL are doing it. However I feel this may be the writing on the wall so to speak, the nail in the coffin, it screams of desperation on US Air's part.

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

So much for the synergies from the merger..........

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

Am I reading this chart right, regional service will grow??

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

Pretty soon they'll start charging to use the lav. $2 to pee and $4 to poop.

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

Crap I better use my Dividend miles before they change the program!:panic:
The pilot furlough is going to be nasty since the list is pretty much in the air with all the internal bickering and the whoe USAPA thing. I see legal battles ahead.

Different era. This is going to become the norm.

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

All I know is if i'm paying two ####ing dollars for a .60 cent can of soda, I better get the whole damn can! :sarcasm:

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

I hope it works though. All we need is another mainline carrier taking pay cuts and outsourcing mainline flying. You know, they're real "fun" to compete with when they do that.

Five bucks says the China route is outsourced - either codeshared or given to a star alliance member.

Then again, with them pulling back on the real international routes, they'll just get bought out. Parker just bought, what? 500k in stock? You think he'll lose money on that?

Just a thought...

Re: US Airways to charge for soda, cancel leases, parking pl

The thing that gets my goat about the China route is that if they didn't intend to start it, it should be put out for bid again.

We hear all this whining about "RAISE TICKET PRICES!"...and they when they do something about trying to increase money, people bitch about it. Get you can of soda in the airport before you get on the plane or something...Itll be about 2.50 there but youl be sure to get the whole can....Look, i think this thing stinks to, but somethings gotta be done. Maybe that was sarcasm above...
