Call me a skeptic, but what management team put US Air where they are now? Not to mention America West, and it's federal and state bailouts?
BTW, according to the America West pilot's union, the transition for the pilot side, should be "smooth"..............

One of the reasons why US Airways is in such horrendous shape is because they undertook a merger that made no sense.
Now, without judging whether or not this proposed merger makes sense, isn't it highly ironic that US Airways is saying that a merger will save them?
Also, the list of megamergers that end up badly is long and indistinguished. Let's see, AOL-Time Warner, HP-Compaq, Piedmont-Allegheney-PSA, AT&T-NCR.....

Maybe to drum up new business for the newly formed airline, I'll be able to snag one of them $98 fares to Vegas and a G&T waiting for me when I sit down.
I can remember flying America West when drinks were free no matter where you sat. And the hot towels after the flight were quite nice, unneeded, but nice. Alright, sometimes I kid too much. It's actually looking around $250 right now.

Of course that's not what they are saying at all. What they are saying is that anyone willing to finance their exit from bankrutcy will "save" them. This is what said creditors want. What USAir or America West wants is really irrelevant. You have to stop thinking of these like tradtional mergers. This is consolidation where the creditors try to shape the assets into something they think will give them some return.
In fact the airline industry was built on a series of quite successful mergers. More were successful than not. Check the history of about any legacy carrier, they are a conglomeration of many smaller airlines. There were some noticable mis-cues as weak airlines tried to react to deregulation and USAir was definitely a prime example.

Read a report that GE is drooling over this. The consolidation would allow GE to pull some of the aircraft on order/option with HP and actually SELL them in Europe. Airbus gets buyers for the A350 (or at least orders, since that's what counts right now). If they can make more money in the long run, I have no doubt both GE and Airbus will drop as much cash as they can into this. Wouldn't be surprised to see them get at least one or two seats each on the new board of directors, either.
