US Air CEO rejects bonuses

From A.net:

According to a post on US Aviation, Doug Parker, the former AWA CEO and now CEO of the merged US Airways, has declined to accept a $770,000 cash incentive bonus approved by the airline's board for AWA's 2005 stock performance.

The release quoted Doug as saying, in part:

“As CEO of a larger merged airline that has many employees who have taken significant pay cuts and many others still on furlough, I have communicated to our Board that I would prefer to receive an annual cash incentive when our employee profit sharing plans are paying dividends too. I recognize that deciding to lead the former US Airways team comes with some expectation of shared sacrifice. Ultimately, I look forward to the day when profit sharing is a consistent part of our culture and appreciate the efforts of all of our employees as we work to integrate our two airlines.”

I guess not all airline CEOs are evil.:)

Thats an umbrella I might not mind working under! Its about time management shares a little for the common good. In other news I'm interviewing with Piedmont Airlines (US Airways express carrier) on monday!

Good luck and say hi to Sheila for me!

Thanks! I hope to see you on the line! As a side note - how do you like EWN? I think I'd really like ROA though - how tough is it to get any particular base? If I had a top 3 would I have any chance of getting those first off? Any other suggestions before I head out? Thanks again!

Shoot, what about the other few zillion managers that ARE taking bonuses. Besides, the big money is in stock options.

Shell game.

seems to me he might be *trying* to make things look reputable... it's not ALL about the CEO.. it's also about the other zillion manager and how/if they're taking their bonuses and if they're all (including Doug Parker) taking stock options in all this because stock options are the same thing as bonus's.. just in stock, not dollars...

I want to believe he's looking out for his *family*, i'm just not sure i "trust" it yet.

Good points... By the way Doug - where does your Avitar come from? Maybe I'm just really cartoon illiterate but it makes me laugh every time I look at it! Something about the disgruntled looking face...

"What cat suit?" :)

It's from "Perfect Hair Forever" on Cartoon Network's [Adult Swim]

I don't really have anything to base this off of (maybe its because they have pretty airplanes now?) but I think US might be positioning themselves pretty well with what they are trying to do?

Anyone that has followed them since they got out of bankruptcy think they are on the right path? I guess they are trying to be a LCC on the domestic side and then have the fancy service on the international side?

Just thinking if things go well for them, this might be a good place to work in a few more years after the whole merger with HP goes through? Having three east coast bases 10 miles apart is pretty weird though. Actually, didn't they close Pittsburgh?

ya'll think Doug Parker's a nice guy? I used to work for AWA. My mom still does. The company is anything but employee focused.

I've never flowin for Piedmont but I have lived in a few of their bases, CHO (4 years) and ROA (18 years). Man, I'd go for CHO in a second. As a matter of fact if I could find a reason to get back there I'd never move away. It's a great town. Great place to be single or if you're married it's a great place to raise a family with much better schools than ROA. A lot of people say it is too expensive but if you know where to look it is quite affordable. Great bar scene and a TON of really good restaurants.

Thanks for the advice. Being displaced from Montana out to North Dakota the main reasoning for those bases are for some mountains! They may not be like the rockies but its a heck of a lot better than the flatness of the red river valley in North Dakota/ Minnesota!! I had a friend that lived in ROA and I"ve seen a lot of pics - sounds like the mountain biking is good there too - but sounds like that is also the case for CHO. My wife has a lot of family in CLT too. so I guess those would be my top three.

Probably can't go wrong with any of the three. VA and NC are great places to live with extremely friendly people. Lots of history in the area as well if you're interested. You are correct in saying that the Blue Ridge/Alleghanies are not the Rockies but they are equally beautiful...just very different and tend not to have that awe inspiring first glance that the Rockies do. Look under the surface a bit and they'll grow on you I promise. If you fly fish there are some decent tailwater trout fisheries in the VA mountains as well.

The fact that Charlottesville is centrally located, in the mountains, and is a college town would make it my first choice. The fact that it's a college town means that in a wierd sort of way it has a lot more to offer than cities that are twice their size.

If you can't tell I REALLY miss living in VA and am trying to find a way to get back ASAP! NJ is just not doing it for me. I know quite a few people in ROA (I grew up there and parents still live there) and CHO (graduated from UVA there and my sister lived there for a long time) so I can give you a pretty good picture of both. PM me if you want some more details.

I thought this sums it up pretty well.

I moved to CHO in January - let me know if I can be of assistance! Not airlines myself, but my Dad is retired Piedmont:)

P.S. I heard a rumot through him that CHO is closing as a PDT base?

Good luck!

CLT closed as a PDT base this month (or it is next month... not sure.) I almost ended up living in CHO when I was going to school. It seems like a really nice town. Can't speak to ROA as the hotel we stay at there is right near the airport and I've never been downtown before. It does look nice the the approach though.

As far as DP turning down the bonus... good for him. The thing was this bonus was from what he did at AWA and was due to him from before the merger. I don't think many other manager level people turned down any bonuses, but I think most people (on the east side anyways) are pretty optimistic about how he will run the company's future.

AWA has always been a company blessed with great employees and held back by questionable leadership from management.

The local news will pull a fluff piece like they did with Jonathan Orenstein: Show him on a Harley riding with his buddies on the weekend, kissing his wife, and make some touchy-feely comment. They'll title the piece, "The Valley's Hometown Airline's Maverick CEO... Our Very Own Herb Kelleher!".

If I were Herb, I'd start suing people that denigrated my name like that.

CLT and PHF are closing as of May 1.
CHO is not closing.
I love EWN because I have a free crash pad (family) but the town is really small, boring, and nothing to do. Its like going back into a 1970's time warp. I am having a house built in RDU(not a base), about an hour and a half drive from EWN.
I don't know much about ROA, but the crews I know who live there like it.
You wont have much of a choice as far as getting a specific base. Your first day you will fill out a permanent bid form with your base choices in order of preference. You will get based according to availability and seniority.
With CLT and PHF closing, there is going to be a lot of movement by senior pilots. I stand a good chance of getting displaced out of EWN. That would really really suck for me, and depending on where I end up, I may consider leaving PDT. I refuse to commute and or move to New York (SYR & LGA).
Looks like I will be getting my first a$$ reaming by an airline. Bend over and grab em'!

Do they make you guys sign a training contract there? If so, would it still apply if this does happen to you?

How would it be for someone living in DC in terms of commuting to a base that you guys have?

Good luck, wish you the best man!

No contract. A lot of new hires leave in their first year to go fly jets.

As far as commuting from DC. We do fly there but it would be a 2 or 3 leg commute depending on where you get based. You would probably have to fly through PHL, then on to your base.
Example:
If you get EWN, chances are you would have to fly to PHL then CLT then EWN. There is only one flight a week (Sunday) PHL-EWN.

Commuting absolutely sucks, avoid it at all costs. Especially if you have a life outside of flying.

Alright, so that's not happenin' for me. Seems like an airline where you have to live in base to make that work pretty much.
