Hi Doc,
When I'm not flying, I'm usually out hiking through the CA gold country which is blanketed with nasty poison oak. Despite my best efforts to avoid it, some of the places I visit are so rugged that it's impossible to avoid the stuff. In the past I've taken pregnizone for the resulting dermatitis, but I was wondering if there's any vaccine available to desensitize my immune system to the urushiol and prevent a reaction in the first place. If I take a commercially prepared oral product like Oral Ivy for extended periods, is there any chance that it can cause liver or other permanent systemic damage?

Thanks!

I do not know what is in oral ivy. Their website does not list the ingredients.

There are no proven desensitizations for poison oak. Sorry. Barrier protection is the best prevention.

Doc, thanks for your response on this.

Just a reminder for our users, please keep to aeromedical and flight physical topics. We don't want to misuse this terrific resource. This isn't "Free Medical Advice Forum." :D
