UPS MD-11 crash at SDF

Doubt it.
Curious why you say that? Airlines get ferry permits all the time, and I’d be surprised if some kind of “good enough” inspection doesn’t pencil out to be cheaper than trying to scrap them in whatever random place they were when the bomb dropped

Hey, it has the correct number of fingers! Which is I guess zero, but this technology is amazing!
It’s going to make both scientific literature and legal precedent into a nightmare hell of hallucinated non existent slop but at least like 100 people are going to be indescribably rich!

For UPS, I would venture it's all the 76s they can get, FedEx is a bit different, as they already have triples on the certificate. Also, UPS has been using them on routes 76s could fill for years. FedEx still uses them internationally. Or, you know, dark horse possibility...
wasnt there some constraint around the worldport ramp architecture that made the wingspan on a triple unpossible? or did i hallucinate that

That's the consistent claim. They could obviously find a way to do it, but it would cost $$$ and they might have to admit that they should have opened a secondary hub (a la Fred and IND) a decade ago. Or they could just bulldoze a little more of the South End and make half of us take a 25 minute ride over to ramp 3000 behind a tug doing 5mph. Whatever they do, you can be pretty sure it'll shortsighted and dumb.

Well, considering they’re gonna let all the line pilots go noncurrent and it sounds like the manager pilots are all getting pushed off onto the other fleets ASAP, I’m not sure who would be around to fly them

You’ve still got sims. I’m sure they’d figure something out.

I'd seriously doubt they scrap them all in place. And potentially they don't all get scrapped anyway. Maybe scrapping pays out better than hoping to find a buyer though? I don't really know

Engines are in demand for Data Center power plants.
The rest? Recycle I guess.

Not really sure who would be interesting in buying an airplane that you can't legally fly and that gets zero support from the manufacturer. Airplane nerd who wants to make it their home, maybe? Still would end up being cut up and driven off the airfield in pieces. Could probably turn the fuselage into a swanky night club or rave since they don't have windows anymore. Maybe if one happens to be grounded somewhere like IAD where there's a museum on field might buy one and keep it intact, but I'd imagine they would get salvaged for usable parts then cut up into pieces that fit on a semi trailer and hauled off.

Rather interesting that they "post dated" the MD11 retirement back to last year with this announcment. They were keeping crews current in the sim until today. Just goes to show you how much power the bean counters have. Someone in accounting decided that saying the MD11 was retired last year would look best on the books and they made it so.
Amazing isn’t it. They’d rather pay instructors and run the sim’s vs. just paying crews to stay home. It’s like those divorces where one party will want something trivial because it makes the other happy. I thought it was a typo when I read the date.
Looks like the replacement for the 11, will be the 76? 🥱 And not the 777? 😡

I keep trying to make "fetch", happen!
It’s like trying to get that girl or guy to do that one thing you like after they’ve said no for the umpteenth time 😂. I do wish we were getting something new. Lately I’ve been envious of past colleagues who get to fly something designed in the past 20yrs.
The FAA didn't give up on Boeing and the MD, UPS did. UPS and FedEX can ground their fleets but I'd suspect that if a solution to the current issue is approved they'll happily sell the airplanes to someone further down the chain. And that's why South Florida is known for shady aviation operations. Or maybe they'll all just rot where they sit. If I was a betting man I'd venture the MD-11s will be flying again. Probably with different paint jobs.
Meh, I haven’t been around long but I don’t think we like selling our airplanes after they’re done. I could see the company not wanting to help the competition. @D727UPS may know a little more. I don’t think any of the DC8’s or 727’s ended up getting a second life and the 72’s had updated avionics iirc.

I’m also willing to bet some other unsavory things were found during the inspections and some pocket protector person in Atlanta decided the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Just my uneducated guess.

Maybe UPS can just point out that the kept flying the things for several days after the accident and nobody else crashed!
Synchronizing the world of commerce comes with its risks. Just remember we made the decision to proactively park them… 3 days later. In HNL, PHL, and everywhere between

I wanna see a 777 on ramp 9. That's some entertainment right there.
I’ll get a picture when I go back to work in a few weeks. Kalitta’s new 777-300 has been going between SDF and ONT. I see the JAL cargo sticker on there so idk how long it’ll be around or if the sticker is for legal purposes when they fly to Japan.

Beautiful airplane that 773, isn't it? A 772 would look great in UPS livery. I talk to @Stone Cold about 777's often enough too.
