Got this off our union website. Thought some of you might be interested......

Tell us about yourself.

Why do you want to work for UPS?

Who do you know that works at UPS?

Why do you think they recommended you?

What makes UPS the company you want to work for.

What other companies have you applied, and why.

If fed X calls after you come to work here, what will you do.

The time on your resume that you did not have a job, what were you doing?

Then there will be the scenario questions. They only asked me three, but
looked like they had a stack of them.

1ST You are the captain, you and the crew are checking into the hotel
after a long day, the FO gets in to aloud argument

With the clerk due to him not having a room, there are lots of people around
listening to him yell at her. What do you do?

2ND You are a very experienced Copilot on this aircraft, The Captain is
very experienced overall, but very little experience

On this aircraft. You also know that this Capt. has the reputation as a
cowboy, a kick the tires light the fires type. As you start the trip you
notice that he does not respond to the ck list the terms you expect, and
does not follow SOP. What would do?

3RD You are a co pilot With a new FE that is a black female, the captain
is constantly yelling at the FE to the point that she is crying. (They do
not lead you whether this is a racial or not I did not answer, I answered as
it not being racially motivated.)

What would do or say?

If you do not get hired today what are you going to-do.

Next was the tech.

When do you need a takeoff alternate?

What are the requirements for an alternate?

If you destination abc and your alternate is xyz and half way to abc the
company changes your flight destination to xyz and the weather drops below
alternate mins but is above approach mins may you continue and Why?

How far to a take off alternate Time and Distance two engine airplane?

What speed will you use to hold on the missed approach? 3,000 feet

With slats out your min speed 190 with clean wing, min speed 210 what are
you going to do in the hold?

Oh man! I can tell you right now that I would freeze right there.

#2 is a matter way above an FO's paygrade. I wouldn't say anything to the capt, but I'd make an appointment to talk to the chief pilot asap.

I think I might mention to the CA that I don't feel comfortable with how we're communicating. If something happens, waiting to talk the the chief pilot won't stop it from happening.

As far as the FO and the hotel, remove him from the situation ASAP. Pull him aside and remind him that we're professionals representing our company.

That last one I'm gonna have to give some thought. That's a TOUCHY situation.....

I would tactfully explain how I value my life and explain the importance of a checklist and why they are made.

I guess its better getting chewed out than getting dead.

Nah, it's pretty straightforward, IMO. I'd talk to the capt tactfully about how his yelling isn't helping the crew function, and is, in fact, hindering it. Add to that, that a CO that needs to yell to manage his crew surely isn't leading nor managing, and is moreso making a substandard effort. It's obvious that his current tack isn't getting the desired results, maybe trying a different tack will?

Hey DE727UPS, is the "black female" question based on a historical event? If that happened, I'll hunt down the captain and poop in his flight kit because she was a big inspiration after I met her earlier in my career.

I'm curious as to all of our resident airline pilots would deal with situations 1 and 2

Well I'm no longer an active airline pilot, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express once, so I guess I'm still qualified.

Intervene! No excuse for taking out your wrath on anybody!

Get the F/O away from the clerk. Tell him to take my room and I'll deal with the shortage. Hand him my room key and get him on his way, away from the crowd, away from the desk clerk. Then deal with the room shortage problem.

(After all is settled down, I'd call him from my five star hotel, and ask him to meet me in my room. I'd tell him I'm in the Jacuzzi, having a glass of wine with the Hooters girl I met in the bar and we can talk about his behavior, and see how he likes HIS room!)

I have been there, done this, have the tee shirt. That being said, I also was about 14 years older than this Captain, and had started flying while he was in grade school.

I basically pointed out I was going to read the checklist as required by our ops procedures. If he didn't want to respond, fine, I'd stop until he did. So he kind of grudgingly did. But then he decided he was going to use HIS procedures, which were mostly off the previous airplane he had flown. (BTW, he was where he was because his base got closed, and he was not a happy camper now that he had to commute.)

I basically told him that as long as he didn't try to kill me, or put me in a position where I felt compelled to take the airplane away from him, I'd keep him out of trouble. I also told him flat out I was going to call our union professional standards folks and tell them what I had encountered with him. As the trip went on, I tried to tactfully explain when he was deviating from procedures on that airplane. Kind of used the "this is a little different than the 727" (which he had flown), and pointed out what the right way was. Not pushy, just informational. Minor stuff I didn't mention as I was more interested in his being safe. Especially since the next F/O might be a brand new guy, or one who wasn't as "involved" as me.

By the end of the trip, he was actually starting to follow the rules a little more. Best of all he was using the procedures that applied to the MadDog. Whether it was due to my urging or the fear of getting grief over what he knew was wrong, I don't know. I did make the effort to thank him for what he did and we parted friends. I never flew with him again as he bid out of the base to fly international shortly after that.

Ah hah! Now I know where that mess in my flight kit came from!

"is the "black female" question based on a historical event?"

Not that I know of. I don't know why they would even put race in the question.

It's funny that I've seen versions of all the interview question scenario's in real life.

Not long ago we got into Spokane after an 11 hour all nighter. The hotel was very full and they had given our rooms away. It was 6am and the cleaning crew wouldn't come on duty for another hour, they told us we could wait for clean rooms. What ticked us off was they gave our rooms away without providing a back up. I mean, it's not like they didn't know we were coming. I'd have had a slight amount of sympthy for the hotel clerk had they got us rooms at another place, in advance of us showing up. They wanted us to wait around until some rooms got cleaned. Finally, we got them to book us rooms at another hotel a 15 minute ride away. Luckily, I had my car there so transportation wasn't a problem. The Capt was getting pretty irate with the clerk. I won't call it a shouting match but it was a heated, one way, discussion with the clerk not coming up with any good answers. I really had no problem with the Capt being less than civil. The hotel screwed us pretty bad. It cracked me up a couple of weeks later cause it was "airline employee appreciation week" at the hotel and the staff was extra nice....

Once when I was a high time 727 F/E, I had a Capt take off before I finished the checklist. It was a short taxi and a long checklist. Guess he figured it was no big deal. The F/O didn't say a word. The tower asked us if we were ready to go and the Capt told the F/O to say "yes", and off we went. That pissed me off pretty bad. I was red in the face for about half an hour. I didn't say anything about it until we got in the crew van and I mentioned it would be nice if we finished the checklist before we takeoff. He just kinda gave me a dumb look and didn't say anything. Funny thing is...he's a retread 747 F/E now.

Another time I when I was an F/E, I flew with a female F/O who didn't have a very good reputation as a pilot. I had flown with her a lot, though, and thought she did okay. She was kind of eccentric, though. Anyhow, this Capt I didn't know came out and flew with us and this guy treated her pretty bad in the plane. Got on her case about a bunch of things that weren't a big deal. They ended up screaming at each other and she was about in tears. A lot of tension in the cockpit. The rest of that week we flew together it was like sterile cockpit all the time. Communication was limited to getting the job done and that was it. Both the Capt and the F/O spoke to me in private. I backed the F/O up and told her the guy was a jerk. The Capt later told me he had previous run in's with this F/O and was on a short leash with her.

So there's some real life stories that UPS could use in their interviews.
