UPS Hiring Slowdown

Airplanes fly on PFM, Change my mind
Just thought I’d mention UPS isn’t likely to hire very much for the next year or maybe two. I think it’s just going to end up replacements for just a few retirees until the economy is looking better.

I expect to maintain the current number for a couple years then hire quite a few. For the very few hoping to come over that’s your prospectus moving forward.

Unfortunately, I suspect that after the whirlwind hiring that has happened the last two years it will quiet down significantly. Hiring will still happen but not nearly as much as we've seen since 2020.

I know United still has a few more classes planned this year due to forecast growth and retirements during 2020. I would think the pace would slow down by 2024 but a lot of it depends on what the economy does.

AA, SWA and possibly several others are going to be moving to Flight Keys for flight planning. AA and SWA are both in the process for training and roll out of Flight Keys. This will mean a good chance both continue to do significant hiring as there will be a need for more desks during roll out and covering desks for training on the new software. Good chance that even after roll out is complete there will be a need for more desks than current at places like AA and SWA as related dispatch software and products still needs to catch up and be integrated with Flight Keys. Any other airline getting ready to do the same will have similar needs.

Have they mentioned if flight keys will change the number of flights to be planned by a dispatcher?
We have LIDO and I’m positive it robs us of around 10% planning efficiency at minimum 5%. If we ever switched we’d be over staffed by the same 5% of people, but don’t tell management that. Lol

I think we’re feeling the economic pains earlier than the passenger carriers. FedEx is really on the ropes from what I’ve been told. My assumption is when your slowdown hits full swing the cargo carriers will be back to hiring. Of course our single digit classes are a drop in the bucket

I think FedEx is facing increased competition from Amazon allowing leftover space on the planes they wet lease to be sold for flying non-Amazon cargo. Or perhaps just less demand for overnight delivery, companies not paying a premium for that as they are worried about a potential economic slowdown. Anyhow...we'll see what the near future brings.

Flight Keys roll out is the first step in a long process. Initially, workload will see a significant reduction. Where it finally settles at depends on how long it takes to integrate all the other software into Flight Keys and for dispatchers to become proficient in using Flight Keys.

For both AA and SWA, there are a lot of related programs that arent immediately integrated with Flight Keys.

Same for B6. Flight Keys cutoff is scheduled for Fall ‘23 but I’m curious how well our other programs will integrate. I have heard good things though. Well, good and some bad.

I was in there a couple weeks ago and saw them building some new desks for dispatch. Can you confirm?
