CHICAGO, Sept. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced it will recall nearly 600 pilots currently on furlough to address the airline's future staffing needs. No United pilots will remain on furlough following the recall.

"We look forward to welcoming back our co-workers as we complete work to integrate all of our pilots into a single work group," said Howard Attarian, United's senior vice president of Flight Operations. "We are pleased to have this group of talented aviators back on our team. They are among the most experienced and most accomplished in the industry."

Training classes for the recalled pilots will begin next month and run through the end of the year. In total, United has more than 12,000 pilots.

The street hiring was for Continental, I believe, with the understanding that United furloughs could take the job and get "recalled" to their original position when the time came.

So why did the hire off the street before recalling united guys?

Because the furloughs weren't biting enough vacancies (see management playbook chapter "how to find money saving opportunities between the couch cushions).

Of course, I'm not intimate with the market planning and labor agreements between management and the labor groups. United may have been encouraged to keep that flying with native Continental pilots anyway. I heard that there was an agreement to offer it to furloughed United pilots so it could have been a "take or or leave it" offer or it could have been something agreed to at the merger table. Or it could have been a combination of the 2 with some certificate requirements peppered in there. I'm going off what I've heard.

Heard this today straight from the mouth of a United pilot at 5 guys... relish in the good news while its still flowing.

Apparently a handful of guys from my employer have been hired by United since January. Considering my position on the list, I'm just thrilled to hear about movement.

I know in our case, a lot of guys got hired, were furloughed and when the recalls came, decided to "bypass".

When the airline needs more bodies, it's got to hire.

At least in our case.

Well, the projected schedule for things happening at UAL is actually on point! ISL done by early september, then recalls, then the hiring off the street resumes.

Really? You're already a foot out the door?
Not really, but just want to be open to some east coast possibilities (and the europe flying I've always dreamed of doing). But bigger than that, family reasons- aging parents/handicapped sibling that will need looking after- it's a very long commute from hawaii, although doable.
