Coming this Summer: United FFD Open Houses

Fellow Compass Pilots,

The Compass MEC has the pleasure of announcing a wonderful opportunity for you: earlier this week, the United MEC announced they would be hosting a pilot open house for ALPA Fee For Departure Carriers. These events will be held in Chicago and Denver later this summer.

There are several benefits to attending this exciting event. Only ALPA members who currently work for a Fee For Departure Carrier are invited to attend. Personnel from United Flight Operations, Human Resources, Training Department and Instructors will be on hand. This will give you the opportunity to interact face-to-face with people closely involved in the hiring process. They will offer their advice on how to prepare yourself should you get a call for an interview with United Airlines.

Your MEC is quite grateful to the United Airlines MEC for taking this step in the right direction and reaching out to their fellow ALPA (FFD) brothers and sisters during this unsettling time in our segment of the industry. Hopefully we will see some of our pilots move into the flight decks of United airplanes.

Below is the information currently provided regarding this opportunity. If you have any questions regarding the events please see the email address listed below.

· Visit alpa.org/ualmecfeefordeparture to register. Registration opens on July 7that noon Eastern Time and closes on July 14th at noon Eastern Time.

· Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and space at the events is limited. Through the online registration process pilots will be able to rank preferences for open house dates and times. If the pilot’s first open house date and time preference is full, he or she will automatically be placed in their next choice, etc.

· The UAL MEC is still finalizing the dates with management, but the plan is for August and September. Additional communications will be distributed when the firm dates are determined.

· Due to the anticipated high demand for this event, we expect every available slot will be filled. IF SELECTED, pilots who register will receive a confirmation email the week of July 21. The email will include registration date/time. Pilots aren't officially registered for this event until they receive the confirmation email.

· The dress code for this event is business casual.

· There is no cost to attend an Open House, outside of any individual costs of traveling to and from the event.

Questions concerning the Open Houses should be directed to ualmecfeefordeparture@alpa.org.

That's what the email says. I'm sure when you apply they will ask what ALPA carrier you are currently affiliated with and go from there. I don't really know though, I'm just posting an email.

Speaking of poaching. How crazy would it be if Parker, Anderson, and Smisek had a secret no poaching agreement similar to what's going on in court over Google, Apple, and several others in the tech industry. Someone better get to the bottom of this!

If I were a strategist at United I would start heavily recruiting at a recently renamed "E" airline that is a few hundred pilots worth of attrition from disaster.

Well you know just as much as I do that for every 2 guys over at E that want to go to Delta there's at least 1 guy that wants to go to United, and that's not cus they like United, it's because they hate Delta so much.

So, Republic and Skywest pilots need not apply? Wonder who's supposed to get all the future United flying.

Right, because they would totally turn down a Delta job if it were ever offered to them. We have several of those types too.

Ooooo you're talking about Envoy right?

I don't know how good or bad their staffing situation is so I can't really attest to Envoy. I do know that if we suddenly lost 2-300 at Endeavor really fast though there's no way Delta could staff their 50 and 76 feed. At least not as cheap as they do right now.

Love those guys. So,e people truly are special.

Please, everyone, it's envoy, not Envoy.

And as far as staffing goes, in DFW alone, on the embraer, there are 29 open trips for captains tomorrow, and 31 for FOs. Junior manning is a way of life. My resume is ready.

A certain amount of the workforce is going to be dissatisfied with their employer 100% of the time, regardless of who that employer is.

Also, an airline is an airline is an airline. The things that suck about working for an airline (which, IME and IMO, are honestly fairly few, although some of the things aggravate me) tend to be the same everywhere. The difference, IMO, lies in magnitude, paycheck, and culture. I'm reading a book by a Brit who flies for, I think, one of the (V)LCCs over there. They have the same problems as we do. Yup, junior man sucks. Yup, zero staffing sucks. Yup, PBS sucks (unless you're #1 and maybe it even sucks then). Guess what. It's all the same. Especially at this level.

Come in, do your job, shut up, and go home. Respect your fellow pilots. Doesn't much matter to me if you're "taking my job" because at this level and with certain very limited exceptions, it's not my job to take.
