United Pilot pleads Guilty to being drunk

I don't have a problem with giving second chances, but some people don't deserve them. In this case, this is what scares me:

...

Can we say Freudian slip?

Disclaimer: I only skimmed the article, so if he explains some other detail later to reveal the reasons for such an absurd statement, then disregard my post.

I believe he was explaining what his attitude as an alcoholic was at the time about drinking, not what his post-recovery thinking is.

Don't be snide about this. It wasn't a minor lapse of judgment on their part. They made a conscious decision to continue to drink through the night knowing that they were flying the next morning. Complete lack of judgement and disregard for safety, not just a "screw up".

Looking at this in 2009, you need to remember that the world was a very different place 30 or 40 years ago. Especially the military, where pilots had a reputation as hard drinking partying womanizers as recently as 15 years ago when I signed up. Tailhook, MADD, public opinion, common sense - a lot has changed since then.

But anyway, people screw up. It is part of being human. People who recognize their failures, and straighten themselves out get a lot of respect in my book - because most people can't or won't.

No, but the French still do it!

That's correct! Well, a bit with their inflight meal.

I think if we're going to banish him for life, might as well do the same thing with all motor vehicles.

How many folks die from drunk pilots? Not many.

How many folks die from drunk automobile drivers? More than 13,000 per year. That's almost 36 per day, nearly 1.5 people an hour. (stats)

There's no way in the world I'm justifying operating an aircraft impaired because that's batcrap stupid, but the American public needs to look in the mirror a bit closer.

I think Jim-Bob Joe and Drunkard Debbie would say pilots should be held to a higher standard than the regular old boring automobile drunks. After all, they do fly 'dem planes.

Exclude me? Why should the decision he made exclude me!?

Swami says you're young. Walk a mile, kid. Everybody screws up, including you.
 A-effing-men!
Life has a way of knocking you down and sometimes putting its foot over your neck. As long as you can get back up, recognize errors, correct them and never repeat, YOU DESERVE a second chance.

These young'uns will learn... Humble yourself and build true character by loving your fellow man. We are all brothers and sisters, lets not forget that. Family first.

Looking at this in 2009...

:D

But yeah, what he said. Things are just different now.

Everyone screws up. I think it'd be nice if we still had the kind of industry where things like this could happen, and for the people who really wanted it, they could work for the second chance. Today, forget it. And that's too bad. Working for and achieving second chances demands real character.

[Puts on the "oh my god, you like drunk pilots?!?!?!?! You are Soooooo Unpproffeshinal..." suit...]
