United Pilot Diverts Flight Due to Movie Complaint ???

It's harder than you think! If the only way to listen was through headphones then I don't see an issue with showing the movie, as long as the violence is graphic and there aren't titties flopping around.

For those types of systems the audio CAN be routed through the main cabin speakers, and that is utilized when showing the pre-flight safety demo/briefing. However, when the movie is shown, the audio is NOT routed through the speakers, but is only available via the headphone jack in the armrest.
 
It just reminds me of the old tropes of standup comedy.

Now, "The movies are bad!" Or, "They didn't even HAVE movies!"

There's a copy of "The Hangover" on the video on demand but it's so cut, edited and censored, it's unwatchable. Cut, edited and censored for whom? "Yeah, I'm a impressionable, highly religious, Amish kid from Pennsylvania and I want to watch a version of a movie about hookers, booze, drugs and Las Vegas, but I don't want it to insult my good sentiment".

They played "Eat Pray Love" on the 737 during a commute and do you think I paid more than a hot second of attention to that schlock? Hell no. I did catch a glimpse walking back from my customary pee over Kansas though.
 
I'm not intimately familiar with the Airbus drop-down video system (as my company removed them from all aircraft to save weight), but I'm pretty sure you can't raise and lower individual screens. I'm pretty sure they're all tied into each other. I have seen a screen or 2 not come down on other carriers and to get them all to come down, they have to raise them back up and lower them again. Maintenance might be able to lower a screen by itself, but I doubt the FAs can.
 
Even if they could retract individual monitors, those are generally shared by three or four rows so at what point does the IFE that 9 to 12 passengers expected by out-trumped by a single passenger?

On our Caribbean flights out of Direct TV range we offer free movies. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. You can't win. Try to do the right thing for one group, you upset the next group. We had a family upset on my flight because we had a Disney cartoon playing that they thought was inappropriate. Okay?.?.?. Then another family on another flight upset because Argo was playing. Okay?.?.?.

Man, the crap I saw that I SURPRISINGLY didn't end up as an axe murderer would make those parent's head explode.

Showing hacker/slasher films with blood, guts & gore with a well-deserved "R" rating is, I think, inappropriate on a plane.

If a movie has a PG-13 rating (as the movie in the OP did), it can't be THAT bad... If you don't like it, don't watch it! There's lots of other things to do (read a book, read a magazine, write notes on a sick-sak, take a nap) and there's NO WAY you'll like or "approve" of every movie shown on every flight you'll ever be on.

People need to quit being oversensitive and "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!!!" and keep some perspective before getting offended.

But you're right, most PG-13 films errr, movies are fairly tame.

I think people forget that when you're home, you rule to roost. You can control 100% of your children's world, but to expect that same level of control once you step out into public is unrealistic.

When I was wee lad, I "saw some stuff". I think I saw my first porn when I was 9 (older brothers, parents out of town and brand new BetaMax) - really didn't care because I was happier that I found my soldering iron so I could fix my radio and didn't pay attention, a dead body (headshot!) at my great uncles house -- in fact it was him, my neighbors brains on my dad's Caprice Classic when he fell out of a tree he was trimming, and I'm not an axe murderer or anything.

Well, I don't murder often, but I can be a little sociopathic when it comes to unleashing the BANHAMMER OF THOR.

I'm not suggesting we not filter and attempt to protect children, but those parents need to have a coke and a smile and shut the *mumble* up...

Sometimes you're going to walk into Chuck E. Cheese right before they close to pick up a pizza and the rat's head is going to be off and he might be smoking a doobie. Get over it and move forward.

Things have to get pretty bad to divert for passenger misconduct because there will be a mountain of paperwork and a carpet dance in front of a deskfull of Doubting Thomas's.

If the captain thought it rose to that level, I'll bet you it did.

Now I wonder, in retrospect, if the children would have gotten more of a bad example from parents that apparently lost their cool and got the whole family booted from a jet, or a highly-censored audio-free movie on an 8-inch screen a few rows ahead.
