United Nosewheel goes *pow*

I sent an email in to training leadership talking about how we were having tail strike issues at Kalitta. Kalitta then introduced a “Pitch 5” callout and it cutdown tail-strikes to zero. Basically during landing, the PM sees that Pitch is 5 degrees, they call it, and you as PF know that’s all you got for Pitch on landing. It was simple and effective.

The email went over like a fart in an elevator or at least that was the impression I got in the response.

I’m checked out 30 seconds into my FO’s 7 min brief. If Huggies was in charge, we would brief threats and that’s it. Briefs are starting to become like NOTAMS, you’re really not getting anything out of them, but they’re there on the FDR (FP) for the lawyers.
I think we need to remind pilots that they can utilize the “first flight of the day” briefing items. It seems FOs don’t realize they can omit stuff and end up doing a full briefing on every leg of a four day trip. Also, do we need to brief an entire approach for a visual backed up by an ILS?

It...does?

I've never been able to tell a difference.
Only difference I've ever noticed is the engines seem to spool down a little quicker causing the bottom to tend to want to drop out a tad faster....otherwise, they're not that different.

Flap deflection is more (full), auto brakes come on sooner, completely different flare mode and height it starts 50/100 feet, no artificial trim down etc.

Those things are different, but I haven't found them to make a difference in how they land.

A few MCO locals told me the winds were insane, which is why multiple people were videotaping this landing.

Not sure if this was at the moment this event occurred, but it was sporty for a little while.

Interesting. I’ve always felt there was a difference. I’m convinced the A321neo lands like a hybrid of an A320 and A321ceo.

Airbus are busy redesigning the 321 neo flare law. The XLR has a different law to the 321 neo and all sorts of testing/development going on. 321 neo has double the tail strike rate of any other A320 series including the 321 ceo.

Been a while since I've been on the plane, but I'm pretty sure PITCH PITCH PITCH is a standard Airbus 32X callout when you exceed 5 degrees in the flare.

It is based on the rate and not the actual pitch you hit. I think this could have been a factor here. An aggressive flare could have generated a "pitch pitch" call which startled and caused an agressive nose down. Just a WAG.

I’ve noticed especially on a 321 that pitch authority when full (talking 170k lb range) is pretty anemic… can’t remember another plane where I sometimes get close to or hit the stop on a flight control. And yes, do it fast enough and you’ll get the pitch warning.

Even with that, if the common things such as EPs on takeoff and what to do when, are standard items, which everyone should know, can just be briefed as “standard”. Saving the actual talking for things particular to this airport initial climbout instructions, altitudes, SID, whatever.

a number of pilots forget the word brief, in briefing.
