United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP)

Re: United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP

I am happy that UAL is ordering new planes. But I am very troubled by the fact that they are ordering 2 type of A/Cs with the same function (medium capacity, long haul). Did they not learn from PAN AM?

It makes a lot of sense. United can whipsaw Boeing and Airbus against each other. I remember there being a big hoopla at Delta during the bankruptcy because Boeing was their only aircraft builder and Delta could not renegotiate the price very much.

Methinks the USAF might be doing the same thing with the new tanker jet deal, to some extent.

Re: United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP

I'll agree that the CRJs are crap from a pax stand point.

I'll give you a hint as to which airplane scored the highest on passenger comfort surveys for a certain major airline. It was the plane I was a CA on - so you have a 50-50 shot.
I'm not sure what you used to fly, I'll try to guess, where did you come from?

Bomberdier C-series for Skywest?
Thats what they replaced the routes with for now, but United claims to be "thinking" about a "possible" mainline solution.

I came from a small regional based in Indianapolis that flew j31s and SF34s when I started.

Re: United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP

Just one more example of United's terrible management... After running the airline as far into the ground as they have already, you think they would figure out that common fleet types save money. So why Boeing AND Airbus? Pick one. :whatever:

The other thing to keep in mind is that unfortunately, this will likely not lead to any jobs or recalls...

That is not always true, look atLufthansa (Airbus, Boeing, Bae, EMB and now Bombardier..some of them used for the same mission), SIA (same thing), Emirates (same thing), Qantas (same thing)......

You should also keep in mind, that Aviation is not only made of pilots, they are not the only one that need work, think at the peoples involved in building an aircraft, the company that supply parts.....this is GOOD NEWS!

I have flown a lot on United, and has a passenger I like it, for me it's number two after Delta....I would never spend any more money on AA

I've heard negative things about the back of the SF34, but people are strange so I wouldn't put it past them.

My type ratings:

YS-11
EMB-145
ERJ-170
ERJ-190
B-744

So, I was never a CA on a Saab.

Re: United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP

Didn't they just park every 737 they had?

Yep, and six 747s.

I don't pretend understand the inner workings of an airline, but what I don't understand is how they can make this deal while at the same time (supposedly) they're going to furlough lots after the new year. I've heard 1000 pilots and over 2100 FAs are gonna get the axe. I know several employees that aren't happy about this new deal.

The 787 will be their medium capacity aircraft....
The A350 will be their long haul aircraft....

With the A350, United has an option in the future to phase out their 777 aircraft.

With the the 787, United has an option in the future to phase out their 757 aircraft, (probably not, but, they have the option)

About the only aircraft that can be compared are the 787-9 & the A350-800.

The mission of both aircraft are different, the 787 is meant as a 767 replacement while Airbus is trying to get into the 777 market, while replacing the A330 & A340 aircraft.

Aircraft data:

787-8
Range - 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles (14,200 to 15,200 km)
seats 210 passengers in a three class configuration.

787-9
Range - 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,750 km)
seats 250-290 in three classes

A350-800
Range - 8,300 nmi (15,400 km
270 passengers in a 3-class cabin 9-abreast layout
(A330 replacement, competes against the 787-9)

787-3
2,500 to 3,050 nautical miles (4,650 to 5,650 km)
(Niche aircraft, can be a 757 replacement)

A350-900
Range - (8,100 nmi)
314 passengers in a 3-class cabin 9-abreast layout.
(A340 replacement, & 777-300ER replacement)

A350-1000
Range - 8,000 nmi (14,800 km)
350 passengers in a 3-class cabin 9-abreast layout
(A340 & 777-200ER replacement)

If Boeing goes with the 787-10 it will probably be announced after the A350 takes to the sky, more seats less range.......

The 777, isn't an old plane by any measure. With the 777LR, it's still a very good plane, which should have years left to you dominate fleets and be seen in the skies.

What's the deal with a 777 replacement, before a 737 replacement?

Sure, but some of the original 772A's are approaching 15 years old. Typically long range planes are built for fewer lifetime cycles than short range planes. Combine that, and the fact that the longer an airplane is in the air per flight, the easier it is to save fuel by changing the design. There really isn't much out, technology wise, that would make a 737 so much less efficient on a short route than a new plane, that makes it worth spending the money on new airplanes.

Re: United Airlines orders Boeing 787, Airbus planes (AP

Just curious. Do airlines throw down cash for new planes? or do they usually finance them?

Maxie

Aircraft replacement are planned years in advance:)

United operates the 777-200 received back in 1995, the A350 takes to the sky in 2013, United will start receiving the A350 sometime between 2016-2019, by that time United's 777 will be hitting 20+ years.

No reason for United to pick up the super long haul 777-200LR....

United is loaded with the A320 family aircraft, the 737s are history at United....

Actually, I always heard that longer range planes last longer than short range planes.

Due to their cycles. Short range planes compress and decompress more often, more especially planes used as frequently as SWA utilizes their fleet.

I know that to be true, but I've always been told that because of that, the shorter ranger planes are designed with that in mind, and thus tend to last longer. Look at the oldest jets out there in passenger service. What are they?
