United Airlines Awards 11 Vehicles to Employees With Perfect Attendance:

I don't get the whole sick time thing. I'm "out of sick time" at my company. Yet, I got sick, called in for about 2 weeks until I got better with no sick time left to use. I wasn't in trouble. Why? California state law says you can't penalize and employee when a physician says they're actually sick beyond the ability to safely preform their job functions. Sick time or not, with the proper paperwork from my doctor, they couldn't do a thing to me. And I got paid 66% of my regular pay for each day I missed. I'm sure we aren't the only state with such laws, I'd much rather take paperwork to my doctor then get my co-workers sick and make myself feel worse.

No, there are other states with mandated state disability--NY, NJ, RI, HI and also Puerto Rico.

Even most things you 'wipe down' with commercially-available disinfectant mostly just smears the germs rather kills them. Not even sure if it's effective on viruses. Virii? :)

This is the part people are conveniently ignoring...it's not like the employees had to be ironman, 6 months at a stretch without missing a scheduled day of work is not that far fetched.

Seems like it is to me. I can't remember a six month period while flying the line where I didn't have to miss at least one day of work due to illness or fatigue.

Well, that's you and that's flying the line. Lots of other people and lots of other jobs at an airline. I agree that the whole giving away a car thing is kinda ridiculous, but to imply that anyone working for an airline who makes a 6 month period without missing a day at work MUST be coming to work sick and therefore is inconsiderate and/or unsafe is also a little ridiculous.

Sure, I believe it. But like I pointed out, there's lots of other jobs at an airline besides line pilot that don't have quite the level of germ exposure that you do cooped up inside an aluminum tube with 130 walking petri dishes for 2 hours plus at a time.
 
I know.

You figure I would be sick more traveling to stranger places but it was quite the opposite.

Whereas my DH is rarely sick and has a huge bank of time built up, knock on wood. I hope when you get to be his age, you too can be healthy! :)
 
Do sick days still accumulate over your career? My Dad worked for UAL under IAM back in the good old days. He was never really sick and when he medically retired had over a year of sick time to use. Wondered if they still allow that accumulation.
 
Where I work, excess sick leave is paid out at straight time each December. Nice little check around Xmas for not using your sick time. It equals a months pay if you use no sick leave over the year. Some guys use sick time as schedule adjustment. I have no problem with that as our contract isn't very flexible when it comes to personal time off. Hell, I'd take half the year off unpaid if they let me. Maybe next contract....

Depends on the airline. A lot of contracts had caps put on their sick bank during the bankruptcy era. Delta just gets a set amount of sick leave per year, based on longevity.
