Uniforms

Thank god you can't do that in the 145. You have to hit the PTT to transmit to the cabin. I have made my fair share of cabin announcements to ATC and vice versa to realize that if it was a Hot Mic I may have been in trouble. "This POS plane, I know this caution message is just a bad sensor, oh crap the cabin can hear me."

Actually, I was joking about that. They have to hit PTT as well. I just love the reaction I get when I call up there to tell 'em. OOOPS!

Im not saying you should show up looking like a slop. Just because you hang your shirt up at night and wear it again the next day is not being unprofessional. I just picture you guys up at 4 in the morning with a can of starch ironing away just to hop in a van, walk through the terminal (with your blazer on), then sit in a plane for 6 hours behind a closed door. If the shirt looks like I slept in it then I will iron it but for the most part if you just hang it up when you get to the hotel its going to look the same as if you ironed it and rode in the van to the airport. Just my two cents but its not a fashion show and I really don't think people give two shats. You should go through the terminal and ask passengers if they check all the pilots for wrinkles in their shirts. It sounds like some of you may be trying to prove to yourselves that you are professionals.

And I always wear my hat because it does tie the uniform together and I also have uniform shirts and pants that have been tailored to fit correctly. So Im not saying that it is ok to look like a slob, just that ironing every morning is not what makes you a professional.

Who said anything about getting up at 04:00 to iron? Heck, I usually relax watching TV the night before, and that is when I iron my shirt for the next day.
No, it's not so I can walk through the terminal and then sit in a cockpit for six hours. I usually get out of the cockpit once on each leg. Check with the gate; get the release; maybe even have to check with a passenger before pushback if there are concerns; get lunch for/with the crew; change planes. No, I'm not trying to win a fashion show. But first impression is everything in the customer service industry- which is what the airline industry is. The first impression a customer may have of your airline is your appearance as they ask you a question in the terminal, or as they see you walk by.

As Ive said before Im not saying its ok to look like a slop just that it seems that this board is the only place where you see people getting all up tight about ironing your shirt. I jumpsat on a southwest flight the other day and I had spilled all over my tie and threw it away. I apologized to the captain and he said " I couldn't give a #### man I haven't washed my shirt in like 3 months and your lucky that I changed my underwear today" obviously he was kidding but it just shows that people aren't as stuck up and pretentious as some think they are.

What do you think about smoking while in uniform?

Ours just says something to the likes of no smoking while "dealing" with passengers.

What about over at southerjets?

Since I'm studying for recurrent in the other window, I guess I oughta know!

Lemme look

(jeopardy theme music...)

About all it says about tobacco is:

Southernjets employees may not smoke in Southernjets buildings, aircraft or vehicles. Smoking is also prohibited in vehicles providing crew transportation. The use of chewing tobacco/snuff is also prohibited on Southernjet's premises, aircraft, or vehicles

I think I've flown with probably one smoker in the past 24 months. It's not that common at my airline any more.

You and other crew members may not care, but passengers do. And passengers are the product- again, this is not a flying business, but a customer service business. It's like driving by a run down hotel at night- you probably won't stop with your wife and kids. It may be nice inside, but you won't take any chances. Crew members can ignore this, but it is something passengers notice.
Again, I agree that you don't have to have starched shirts, but it does not hurt. Just don't look like a slob.
Smoking? I don't smoke and I don't care if others smoke. In, or out of uniform.
Just keep the *&^%ing smoke out of the non-smoking hotel rooms and I'm happy. If there isn't a smoking room available, either take it out side or suck it up for a night. As the saying goes, I like to have a beer or a glass of wine, but I don't piss all over your clothes. So don't make my clothes smell like smoke.

I think that we agree on this more than you think. I really don't think a passengers gonna notice if you have an ink mark on your shirt pocket or a couple wrinkles on the back of your shirt while your wearing your blazer or sitting up front. Now coming in with dirty wrinkled blazers with wrinkled pants and a stained shirt is different. I agree passengers will question the professionalism of the person in extreme cases, not the the things that are talked about on here.

Just remember kids -- if you appear to not care how you look, some people will assume you don't care about how you do your job. Like it or not, it's the truth! Deal with it.

I used to carry starch in my overnight bag. Then I got stopped going through security at an overnight. Apparently the starch spray cans are 2 oz. too big. I was given thorough, extra screening, and interrogated about why I was carrying so much starch. In uniform. It was retarded. The flight left 15 minutes late because of this. The rest of the crew could not figure out what happened to me.:banghead:

Was it because it was a spray can?
