Uniforms @ FSA

"Its all about image. Would you rather look like a professional or a POS?"

I don't know, maybe you ask the MD11 guys in jammies if they are a POS or professional. Are you saying wearing a uniform helps your self image? Or makes you fly better?

The uniform thing is okay...I think that they may want to consider FSA polo shirts and slacks or something like that...especially during the summer. Is it a big deal? No. I understand why they want people to wear uniforms, I don't mind it. I just think you can accomplish the same professional environment sans shirt and tie, but not stuff like t-shirt and jeans. Like I said, a nice FSA logo'd polo and slacks or whatever would do the job just fine imho. You could even have different colors for the students and instructors.

Ok, POS was a bit far. But how about just unprofessional? And I'd say wearing a uniform has nothing to do with self image, but about the image you project to others. Sounds like your saying let's just get rid of uniforms across the board because how we look means nothing. Can you honestly say that how we look means nothing? That even if I know everything about aviation and showed up to an interview in jeans and a t-shirt I'd still get the job over the guy that didn't know it all but showed up in a suit. And again, what about ROTC and the other training programs where you aren't "getting paid"? Should they quit wearing uniforms? Where do you draw the line and what's the difference?

As for the crew changing at TOC, I guess what they do at FL300 is their business. Did they change back before they landed? Seems that someone wanted them in a uniform since they had it on in the first place. And no, what you wear doesn't make you a better pilot.

I saw quite a few people who looked like POSs while wearing their uniforms at FSA. Shirttail untucked, white shirts that obviously haden't been washed in days, ect.

Currently I wear jeans and my work shirt when I fly with a student and have to be at work (turning wrenches) imeadiately afterward. All other times it's jeans and a t-shirt.

It is my career goal to fly profesionally full time and never wear a tie.

"Can you honestly say that how we look means nothing?"

I can honestly say I think how a student pilot looks means nothing. Yeah.

Wear a suit to the interview, that's not what we are talking about.

ROTC or CAP is part of the military, that's not what we are talking about.

Professional pilots should wear uniforms while in view of the public. I think it's silly to see student pilots running around in uniforms trying to play airline pilot. But, if it turns your crack, knock yourself out.

Seriously, you pay that kind of money to go to FSA, I can see why they want you to wear the uniform. It makes you feel better about spending that kind of dough to look like an airline pilot while learning to fly a plane. That's why ATP is doing it. Makes perfect sense to me.

As an aside...I once owned four small aircraft that I rented out to free lance CFI's. If a CFI wanted to use one of the planes, I had him meet me at Starbucks. Once, this kid from one of the big academies showed up in a business suit. I told him he looked nice but if he went anywhere near one of my airplanes dressed like that, he'd regret it, hehe. I think he found a regular job at a nice flight school. Before you rail on how unprofessional my operation was, several folks that rented my aircraft back in those days have gone on to regionals and majors...to include UPS. I doubt if an FSA guy would ever stoop so low as to be a free lance CFI, but if you do, you might want to leave the uniform mindset at home. You can be just as professional as a free lance CFI in jeans and a t-shirt as you can in a uniform.

<Typo alert!>

"Now that's some funny stuff right there. I don't care who you are, that's funny!"

Well...I might be able to use my newfound moderation ability to fix that, but it is sort of funny.
"...sort of funny"? Cripes, the only thing funnier would be if you would have spelled "but" with two t's. :D

A ridiculous statement as well as a bad generalization.

Sir, I went to FSI and I never confused my Piper for an airliner and never confused what I was doing with line flying.

And as for the guy showing up in a business suit, maybe he was showing you and your operation a little respect. Your dislike for formality except when flying an airliner is noted.

You must have class just seeping from your pores. You must be so well mannered and reserved.... I'm impressed.

By the way, I know you don't care what I think, so you can save your breath. I'm just giving my opinion about the quality of your posts. Pardon me, make that lack of quality.

You're right..... I do not care what you think.

"This quote should definately be on a UPS pilot recruiting poster"

Ummm....UPS doesn't seem to need recruiting posters. They kinda come to us. But point is well taken. Matching jammies, I swear. Maybe Cleared4ILS's UPS MD11 friend, who thinks I'm an idiot, could come here and comment. It would be great to have more UPS pilots at jetcareers, no matter how they are recruited.

Don't think so. He has No time to hang out ALL day on an aviation site..... when he is not flying he is socializing with his friends and watching his investments. Good thing you have JC though huh?

Dang I'm good.

"And as for the guy showing up in a business suit, maybe he was showing you and your operation a little respect"

Maybe. But it was misplaced in this situation. The rest of the story is that I let the kid go on to use my planes and years later, I heard he got on at Alaska.

"Your dislike for formality except when flying an airliner is noted"

Why thank you.

I think the point I was trying to make above, about the relative professionalism in training enviornments, is that either method can lead to success. It's really not about how you dress....

"time to hang out ALL day on an aviation site..... when he is not flying he is socializing with his friends and watching his investments. Good thing you have JC though huh?"

HAHA. You imply, again, I have no life? Can't you do any better than personal attacks?

I consider my time at Jetcareers a service to younger pilots seeking advice on aviation careers. Kinda like giving back. Yeah, I spend a lot of time here but it's fun, I enjoy it, and it serves a great purpose. I don't think they would have made me a moderator if they didn't like what I was doing. As for socializing, I think I got enough of that at NJC 05 to last until NJC 06...hehe.

The FSA guys, as well as the DCA guys and CAPT guys don't like me because I think there is a better way and don't hesitate to say so. Not to say the FSA, DCA, CAPT ways don't work, just that I don't think it's worth it. As such, I don't ever expect to feel the love from guys who take those routes. The heat doesn't bother me. But it's best if you leave the personal attacks out of it and stick to the argument at hand. It makes you look smarter.

Hey, I rented one of those planes (not as a CFI, though...and I never got an invite to Starbucks!). Gone on to Learjets, for whatever that's worth!

I think a civilian pilot uniform is appropriate when customer-service is involved (i.e. when interacting with pax). I keep a sharp uniform because my job involves greeting passengers and waiting with them, serving them food/drinks in the cabin, etc. But aside from that, the measure of a pilot lies in his/her professionalism, knowledge/skills, and attitude.

Shortly after I started flying freight in radial-engine Convairs, our company started requiring uniforms for all cargo flights. My performance, pride and attitude didn't change because of that uniform. In fact, 90% of the time I wore Sears coveralls over the uniform anyway to protect the white shirt from oil, grease and dirt. And to keep warm in the winter months!

I love seeing an old plane of mine on your Avtar. Did you ever have the wings recovered? That was the only taildragger I've ever flown until I got this Luscombe. Luscombe seller says it fly's just like a Cessna 140. Right....

I def. agree. I think the polo-khakis bit is good. The whole uniform? No... and dear god- my 4 days of IOE at colgan with a brand new uniform chafed my neck like a mo. At the end of a 13 hour duty day, I was ready for jogpants/sweatshirt.

I haven't owned that bird, just rented it from you! The Luscombe sounds like fun - always wanted to fly one.
