My question is this... may sound strange to some of you but if you were in the Military then you'll know what I'm talking about.
Has anyone used Shirt/Sock Garters while flying the line? Specifically I need to know if they set off the metal detectors at security.

I've worn shirt stays for 11 years in the Navy and as of last year they've never set off the metal detectors every time I've worn them with the Navy khakis or Marine Corps Charlie uniforms at the airport. I don't know of anyone that wears them consistently other than Marines, especially with the Charlie uniforms.
But we also tuck the same way that Chicaga mentions, you collect the shirt, smooth it away to the back and then fold them in at the back shirt creases - we have 3 creases in the back and 2 creases in the front of our uniform shirts. But I've since deep sixed all my uniforms and they're somewhere on the bottom of the Persian Gulf.
If you've never worn them, they're a little awkward at first, but you get used to them pretty quickly. You wear them so that the stays that are attached to the front of your shirt cross behind your knee and attach to the inside of your socks, and the stays on the back of your shirt attach to the outside of your socks. That keeps them from being too awkward. Of course you have to undo the whole contraption if you want to use the potty.
