Under-rated airplanes

My understanding is that the early models with the small motors and the non-slotted stabilators gave the rest of the series a bad rep. Never flown one, but I've worked on one and I have to say those enormous doors are the bomb.

I loves me some baby Cessna.

Well, if selling price vs. features is any indication, the 140 is under-rated. 4 seats, 150 HP, and somewhere in the 800-900 lb useful load range, and you can get a nice one for $30k. Beats the socks off a 172 in bang for your buck. I have a major soft spot for Cherokees because I work on them all the time.

Of course gliders count! Nice pic of the Pride Aircraft ramo BTW.

Why do you think the Sled is underrated in the lower 48? I alway just assumed there wasn't really a market down there for something that will haul a crapload of stuff but not go far or fast... Places like Southeast or the bush where there are no roads were more it's forte.
The sled is about the best damn freight plane that there is for short "feeder style" trips with quite a bit of bulk. If you don't need the speed, the sled is the way to go - way more so than with a 402 or something with the extra fuel and maintenance costs. Even more so than a 210 because the sled has the cargo door. People down here don't seem to like it because its single engine and only does 125KIAS, but I'd say that there are a lot of runs that would be substantially cheaper to do with a 207 as opposed to a 402, or a PA31. The extra engine in a 402 only gets you an extra 25-35 KIAS really, it certainly doesn't double your speed, but the dualing IO520s are sure a lot more thirsty than the single IO520. Ultimately, right now I think it comes down to the fact that UPS just wants there stuff moved more quickly. In terms of $/lbs/NM though I don't really think there's much that can beat a 207 without going turbine or bigger.

210 is a great airplane! Really fun to fly and probably the only good looking single engine high wing cessna (non-tail drag)

You take that back! The 207 and 206 (especially with the pod) are beauuuuuuutiful airplanes. The 206 has an especially good set of lines when you put the thing on big tires, knock the goofy wheel pants off of the thing, and put a belly pod on it. Look at this 207:

This is the first 207 I ever flew! Look at the paint scheme, the lines, etc! Its a gorgeous airplane.

BOOOO! BOO! BOO! 210 doesn't look nearly as classy as that.

Lots of them have been seized by the AntiNarco force here. They could move a lot of blow from jungle strips in high temperature environment...

Sure that 207 is about as good looking as a PT cruiser or Pontiac Aztec. It's goofy looking. And the pod makes em look pregnant. 210 HANDS DOWN is cleaner, sleaker and faster. I get that the 207 is great 4 fr8, and I was a feeder operator I would certainly have those in my mix. BUT over all the 210 has a good payload, it's sleek without the spars and the RG (although flawed) with doors gives it a very clean look. If you were to GIVE me a sled, IDE sell it and buy the 210.

Reminds me of taylor swift. Good looking in it's own right, but still goofy and gangly looking.

I am admittedly biased as it was my first complex airplane, but as mentioned above the Beechcraft Sierra was a lot of fun to fly. Two cabin doors is nice in the Florida heat and it seemed roomy enough inside.

I've never flown a Sierra, I've just read that they can be had for a decent price and they're a really good value for a complex RG airplane. They're also an interesting contrast to the usual "Gutless Cutlass" or the Arrow everyone trains in (not that I don't love the 172RG, it's the first airplane I ever flew).

And Pat, the lines of the Sled are great and all, but I've always been partial to those of the P210. :)

I helped with an engine change on one and man, what an mx nightmare... But I still want one. But you know what's even better? The 450 shp "Silver Eagle" Allison turbine conversion. ;)

And dude, the Taylor Swift comment... Winning. :bandit:

207s or Queen Airs? Either way, that's a lot of blow.

207's. Yeah you can stuff a lot of blow in there, after all the local production is around 1000 metrics tons a year...
AeroCommander's 500 and 690's were Pablo Escobar's favorite airplanes, he had a whole fleet. Funnily enough, at that time, the director of the Aerocivil (our FAA) was Alvaro Uribe.
That P210 is such a sweet looking airplane, I've flown one back in the 90's in California. That turbine conversion would be perfect over here !

Oh, that's it. Man card revoked!!!!

Picking out a beautiful airplane is a lot like picking out a woman. Do you want the slim woman who is high maintenance and won't be seen off the beaten path, or do you want the one that will go with you on any adventure, care for you in a pinch, and is totally capable of getting dirty (in fact wayyyy more dirty than 210, especially with the mudflaps)? I'll take the one with the good personality. The 207 will take you to a beach, will take you camping, and would gladly help you escape from any hellhole world wide. The 207 can do anything a 210 can except for retract the gear (I'd rather have a woman that shows her legs anyway) and cruise at 150KIAS (she moves way to fast to be as clean as she'd like you to believe). I consider the 210 the vapid, superficial of the high-wing cessna world. The 207 is the girl you marry and make sweet love to every night (and day, because 207s are used for more than just night cargo).

By the way, when are you gonna be in this part of the world? We need to go and get some beers man.

V-35B Bonanza. Everyone talks about V-tails like they're death traps. As a result, they're one of the best performance bargains on the used market. They fly beautifully (yeah, a little yaw-happy in turbulence, but not that bad) and they're pretty fast with an IO-550 up front.

But please, if you're a doctor or an old man, pass ;)

Dude, just quit your job now and move to Bethel. Plenty of sweet love for you there. I hear Yute is having a class next month.

Ok ok just for Pat and his C207 romanticizing, how about the Soloy Turbine 207 conversion with the Allison 250?

I dont have a lot of planes in my logbook, but I think the Seminole is on the top of my list. It is stable, predictable, and will get down and stopped pretty fast. Of course it doesn't perform well in the heat, and the Piper ventilation system absolutely sucks.
