Pilot of Ultralight Craft Flies Into Pickup In Oklahoma’s Delaware County

ZENA— An airplane pilot under the influence of alcohol attempted to take off from a private airstrip in rural Delaware County but crashed into a pickup after the aircraft failed to get high enough to clear an adjacent highway, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Alcohol was detected on the pilot, Henry Edwin Rohman, 61, of Grove, and the cause of the Sunday collision was listed as a driving under the influence, the patrol reported. Rohman was ticketed by the patrol.

Rohman was piloting a 2003 Ultra Light Powrachute Pegas around 4:30 p.m. Sunday when he crashed, troopers reported. Rohman and his passenger, Jim Darrell Boyer, 63, of Seneca, Mo., refused treatment at the scene, troopers said.

The aircraft crashed into the rear driver's side door of a pickup driven by Patricia Ann Mills, 57, of Jay. Mills and three juveniles were taken to Integris Grove General Hospital and were treated and released.

The Federal Aviation Administration did not take a report, saying the Powrachute is not officially considered an aircraft, the patrol reported.

According to the highway patrol report, the vehicle was traveling westbound on State Highway 127 near Zena, a small rural community located between Grove and Jay in Delaware County.

T
he FAA apparently can’t get him because this isn’t an aircraft. But how can the highway patrol cite him for driving under the influence when he wasn't operating a motor vehicle?

Incidentally, Mr. Rohman is the holder of a sport pilot certificate issued in 2010 for “Powered Parachute Land,” but more importantly, “Repairman Light Sport Aircraft.” I doubt that a mere revocation is going to keep this guy out of the air.

If you can get a DUI riding a bicycle, you can get one trying to fly a lawn chair.
