U.S./S.Korea Military Exercise Live Fire

Got the T-shirt too, huh?

So, how close is this place to the actual border of N.K.?

Pretty darn close. The border is just to the NNW of the complex. Here, in my handy dandy map i used to fly with, you see the three ranges outlined in red on the upper center, from left to right they are Santa Barbara, Rodriguez, and Nightmare. Nightmare is just north of Charlie 4, the H231 helicopter base. The DMZ is the heavy line off to the NW, and Seoul is to the SW at the bottom left of the map.

So, anyone near the border on the N.K. side could probably hear all of this?

Very cool map, thank you for sharing this, Mike.

Yes, they can hear and likely see a good portion of it.

I still have all my maps from all my theatres that I used to navigate with, having been a FAC, so its kind of cool to dig them up and see the grease pencil markings/notes I have on them, and try to remember what I was doing on that particular mission/day to where I made those notes. We're talking over 15 years ago here.

Wow!!

Those maps are very cool. Again, thank you for sharing that. That's a great keepsake to hold on to, to reflect on a small part of your large military career.

So, being so close to the border, do you think this possibly has any psychological effects on the N.K. troops or military brass? I would think it would and I would hope it would. Even tho that's a small amount of the total package displayed in the video, from my point of view at least, it's damn impressive!

Oh I'm sure the sending of a message to the North was a big part of this whole thing. And plus likely a fair amount of ordnance that still needed to be expended for this fiscal year lol.

Here's another that was in there, trying to remember the mission and scenario, but was so long ago. Heck of alot of North Korean AAA supporting that push of their armor, mech infantry and infantry. Hell, even my supporting aircraft were Vietnam vintage.

I have done so many AVCATT simulations up those two valleys...

No wonder you're such a magnet ass...how would you have any idea what you were flying over trying to read that chicken scratch?! :D

Trying to get the friendly/enemy laydowns and updates, as well as the fighters and replacement FAC being pushed towards me, all while flying the jet and trying to manage the situation, hence the crap writing. You should see the canopy and how bad it looked. lol!

I remember your board in the GCS on some busy nights. It looked the same and the plane was flying itself!

But by far my favorite "Daff-ism" was the voice change.

In normal voice: "So what did you think of the scene where Garrity and Gay Mike were..."

Radio call: "Cyclops11, JTAC52. Request eyes on following grid."

Voice drops 10 octaves: "JTAC52, Cyclops. Send it."

Back to normal: "So, they were in the locker room and...."

Wish I still had our squadron ready room maps. I hand made both of them from .pdf printouts of NGA TPC charts. One for OEF, and the second for when we kicked off OIR. I was actually really pleased with them, and I hand drew all the tanker tracks, kill boxes, and various tactically significant things/places. Would have made some nice framed posters for the house with a lot of personal history behind them. Sadly I had departed when they got home and I'm sure everything just ended up in the trash.
