Type rating VS buying block time in a twin.

I agree with everyone, type is worthless without time in it. Also, let someone else pay for that type unless it is for a company you plan on retiring from.

Time or ratings will take you further in both the short and long terms. I did a block of twin time when hiring was good, that extra time I had got me the job.

I'd get the MEI and call it good. If you desperately feel like spending cash, buy the twin piston time. Until you know you want to fly for an operator like Southwest a 737 isn't going to help. Personally, I thought I wanted to fly for Southwest until I flew freight for a couple years... now I have no desire. I had considered a 737 type years ago and not getting it was a good decision on my part, it would not have helped me yet and I don't forsee it helping in the future (never know though, i may change my mind and apply years down the road and get the 73 type).

The only type that i would consider paying for at the moment would be something like a Ford trimotor. Something fun, something that may be a good interview conversation topic, and something rare. Will I get it? Doubt it. That's still a lot of cash for something I won't ever use. But of all types, that's the one that stands out that I'd like someday.

To add to my original post, this is your time to gain valuable experience in small aircraft. Spend your time and money studying and flying "in the system" after getting your instrument rating. Shoot hundreds of approaches, arrivals, and departures. Be able to execute an unpublished DME arc into a final approach course (I had to do this on my ATP ride).

The above skill set and experience will serve you far better than a type.

Multi time...

A type is useless unless you have a job to fly that kind of plane.

That and as a wet cpl/multi/ir you'll probably have your ass handed to you in type training unless its in an airline environment (they have already invested money in you so will be more likely to invest more time to get you through).

If you need to add an ATP cert, then I don't see any reason why a type wouldn't go well with that, however, if you're not in any place to get your ATP (e.g. age) buy the multi time, or just get a job as a CFI and make money.
