Two Crew Headaches

Actually I was prepared to follow PCL_128s advice but didnt need to.

Mysteriously, the day before our trip the chief pilot sent out a memo about cockpit procedures, working as a crew, and who the PIC is.

I can only assume thats what caused the change. ;]

Great to hear!

I take that approach in any endeavors where some adjustment is needed but not to make a situation any more tense by flexing muscles. Sometimes little stuff like this, will just be a nice knock in the head to shape up!!

Keep us posted how everything else goes!

Now i was thinking of a funny:

If he starts acting up again, i'd take my belt off and hold it in one hand. Then look him firmly in the eyes and say "the only time i let someone else take control is in the bedroom and it isnt nice. If you want to be in control it's going to require alot of pain and love. Are you up for the challenge?"

And see how that works!!

I can't believe no one posted the youtube clip from "The High and the Mighty" with John Wayne yet.

Love that clip. Love John Wayne. Love Ernest Gann.

Anyway, sounds like things are working out. Does the chief pilot support the captains? If so, after one flight Junior and I are having a talk. No beating around the bushes, no preserving of egos, etc. (Nothing demeaning or unprofessional. Just some frank discussion and teaching session.) Second time, Junior and I are going into the chief pilots office.

In regards to checklists...I don't get it. Every professional pilot I have ever flown with adheres to checklists 100%. This is almost the stamp/seal of a pro. Even for a one line checklist item above 18,000 (altimeters)...the checklist gets pulled out and read. Many amateur pilots don't do this. I give several BFRs annually....and I see this time and again. I suppose they find that it's not cool to pull out the checklist and read it. When I debrief them, they look at me like I have 3 heads.

In my job I fly by myself, so the same route in the same plane every night, and have easily memorized the checklist from use.

I still use it for every phase, every time.

And you guys wanna know what's great about single pilot flying? Sometimes if I'm bored I'll sing the checklist to myself at the top of my lungs.

I had a student whose previous instructor told him to memorize checklists. SERIOUSLY. I was like "He said WHAT? No, we're starting that over."
