Having known the pilot and his instructor (same guy who taught me) I’m going to go with the latter. He has owned the plane for at least 10 years and regularly flies that route. I know people like Jerry exist but I don’t think that’s the case here.
Oh look. Yet another GA pilot in over his head, incompetent, and now a smoking hole. I can only think guess progressively shortened replied and eventual silence was the onset of a heart attack. If not, then yikes.

This one gave me a jolt. Spent a lot of time around these fields, and have a-lot of buddies who still frequent them. Made the obligatory rounds to check in with folks till details came out…while that approach is interesting, its relatively benign, and as you alluded to, something started to feel off, and not in the “Jerry” way . I wont play armchair quarterback, nor will I fuel speculation…just sad and a reminder that the world is a whole lot smaller when you spend your (working) life in the sky.

Tailwinds guys.

I didn't see how old he was, but someone I knew of through plenty of friends crashed and killed he and his wife on an RNAV approach at night to RDU not long after I moved here. Come to find from friends in Florida (where he was from) that he had been showing signs of potential cognitive delays prior to the accident. In his case, it was a change from an ILS to an RNAV approach that threw him off entirely.

Controller did a great job. What was the WX? Wouldn't want to be the guy that signed off his last IPC.

Weather didn’t appear to be that bad. If you want you can google ring cam footage from a house a ways away. You can see the plane, appears to be intact, in a steep dive.

That's crazy. Just doesn't make any sense. Some guy at my ex-airline is blaming ATC for loading him up. Like maybe they changed runways on him. Still on him. You gotta fly the airplane.

I’ve met the pilot a few times and have some time in the accident aircraft. He also owns a RV9 so while possible it’s a Jerry moment, he was also mid 60s so I would say it’s more likely a medical issue
