TWA Flt. 800 Memorial

While visiting relatives on Long Island this weekend, we ended up at Smith Point Beach. The Memorial to TWA Flt. 800 was absolutely beautiful. The 13th anniversary was this past Friday so there were many flowers laid at the base of the memorial itself. Besides the actual wall of remembrance, there is a garden that is very well maintained. I will try to post pictures from my cellphone later. They accept donations to help the families of the victims with the upkeep of the area.

I remember that day. I was on a United 737 ORD-PHL when it happened... That night when I got home, I turned on the TV and it was all over the news. I would like to see the memorial the next time I am in the area...

My cousin was part of the students from Montoursville, PA that were on their way to France. Thanks for posting Patricia.

Thanks for the post. It is good to know that people still honor their memory.

I'm glad I got to see it. I didn't know anyone on board, but was humbled by the experience just the same. I'm not ashamed to admit I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes. :(

I am so sorry, Michael. I had no idea your family had that tragedy. :(

I remember when I was going back home to DAnsville, NY (45 miles south of Rochester). I was only 15 at the time. It was on the radio. At first I thought the plane just had a mechanical failure and ditched in the ocean, (Somthing like US1549) but and when I finally got home and check the TV. I realized then that it was far worse than I thought. Hard to believe that it was 13 years ago.

Strange thing: I was on an EL AL 747-400 bound for Tel Aviv and were holding short 2 aircraft behind the line.

Needless to say we never left till next morning.
