"turn on course" or "on course heading" ??

Maybe you know this but from reading your story it seems you may not. Clearance delivery, ground, and local (tower) all communicate with each other. So if after landing at BUR you told ground you were headed to VNY next, that info was passed on to local even before you called ready for takeoff. So they did know where you were going and your authorization was to turn on course to VNY.

:yeahthat: I fly with a couple people here that like to fly north from KSAT to the SAT VOR before going on course, and every time i get on them about it. If you say you are going to HYI They (ATC) assume you will fly direct to it. If you want to fly to the VOR and then pick up a Victor airway tell them that.

It would be about 055 direct, and 360 to the VOR enough of a difference that sometimes ATC will ask you if you are going to HYI if you didn't tell them about the VOR and Airway.
