Have a question. Since I'm going to be flying a TP, probably a Beech 1900, what type of headset do you recommend?

I'm kind of on a tight budget and while I would like to get something with ANR, I'm just not sure I can spend the money right now. I need something thats durable to go through everyday abuse and something lightweight. I had a David Clark 10-34, but that thing gave me a headache after 6 hours of continuous use. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I know a guy who just sent his X11's back because they were awful...so I would stay away from those.

My suggestion is the Bose. But that's obviously out of your budget.

Lightspeeds are good, but you look rediculous.

...and we all know that its all about lookin cool.

Bose are by far the best out there. Just do the $100 a month thing for 10 months. that way its a little easier to swallow the 1000 price tag

Well if its not all about looking cool, then why don't you wear a dress?

It's my opinion that they look rediculous. JO.

At Piedmont flying the Dash-8 me and most of the crews wore Telex Airman 750's. Its as quiet as a jet up front so you really don't need ANR or even full muff style headsets. I only saw one Captain who wore a set of D/C's left over from Viet Nam.

I don't know how noisy it is up front of a B1900, but I also have a set of Bose too.

I use a cheap AVComm headset that I used during flight training. I keep it really lose so there isn't much side pressure, wear ear plugs underneath and turn the volume up. Works great on a budget. ;)

If you compress the ear plugs and hold them under a water fountain for a few seconds it helps as well. ;)

Hey, you asked about a budget.

I don't think Colgan is hiring into the Beech anymore eh?

Not according to Chuck. He told me after the interview and then again on the phone yesterday that more then likely I'll be going to the Beech. I'll fly the Beech or the Saab, doesn't really matter to me. But I need a headset that I can wear all of the time and not go deaf as well as not break the bank.

Exactly how noisey is it in the Saab or the Beech? I can't imagine its that bad, unless all of the passengers are provided ear plugs. :)

What about this headset from the guys at Avshop...any good to get me by for awhile?

We provide our passengers with ear plugs. I believe most of the lower 48 1900 operators do not though. They won't be listening to it nearly as much as you either though...

I've yet to fly on a 1900 so I can't tell you how loud they are, but as for the Saabs, a lot vary on how loud they are believe it or not. I have the basic DC 10-13.4 (or whatever number it is, non ANR) and it suits me just fine. You said your headset hurts after 6hrs continuous use, you wont wear it for 6hr straight when you have 4-6 leg days, if money is tight just stick with the DC. and yes they are still hiring into the Beech........oh yea and welcome to Colgan

I thought the 1900 was the quietest thing in the world...but I had just come from the 99:). I still think it's fairly quiet. Or my hearing is gone!

If you've got a current instructor cert, a much cheaper option than the Bose would be a flightcomm ANR Denali. They give like 40 percent off for instructors (Ithink I paid like $400), and they're really light and comfy. I wore mine a lot in the ATR, and it worked great.

Uflymike and QC2's. As good as the Bose, half the price, lighter, fits in the QC case (compact), mp3 plugs right in.
