We didn't go out and do maneuvers or anything, however, every co-pilot new to the aircraft has to do the 3 T/O and landings to be "SIC qualified." Would something similar work for the TBM?

You only need an "SIC qualified" co-pilot if the aircraft is one that requires 2 pilots!!! If my company operates a Cessna 150, I don't need a second pilot to operate it. No matter how you turn it and twist it, it's still a single pilot aircraft. Same with the TBM.

Now, if you buy one and you want to have an instructor fly and give you dual in high-performance aircraft for 20 hours, that's cool. But you can't keep doing that forever...it's crooked.

You also need an SIC qualified co-pilot if the regulations under which the aircraft is operated require an SIC (Part 135), single-pilot aircraft or not.

Good point...I was kind of leaving that one out for the sake of the discussion, but I see that it should have been included.

Thanks!!

But, you cannot act as SIC for a flight for compensation or hire without a commercial... so I dont see how the regulations would require more than one person on a pleasure flight (except maybe insurance reasons??)

Anyway, I dont see how buying turbine time is a good idea.... you cant afford enough for it to matter to anyone, you might as well just pick it up for free whenever you can.

The first time (and only time so far) that I flew our King Air I think we called it "King Air Familiarization" in the remarks section of my logbook. Also, we have to take a King Air systems class before we can fly it. Same goes for the CJ to be SIC qualified. We didn't go out and do maneuvers or anything, however, every co-pilot new to the aircraft has to do the 3 T/O and landings to be "SIC qualified." Would something similar work for the TBM?

Looks like I've confused some with my post. When students here fly the King Air, we do not log as SIC, for the reasons posted. The SIC time I was referring to dealt with the CJ, which I should not have brought up since it is irrelevant to the question being asked. I apoligize for the confusion.

Now, the reason two pilots can log the time in the KA is because one pilot is an MEI giving training to the other pilot...which we called "KA Familiarizaion" So, I'm assuming that the same would also be legal in the TBM if the pilot was a CFI giving dual...(calling it high performance training, TBM Familiarization, etc...)

We've got numerous threads already on "when can I log SIC?"

Darn repeating threads....

If you haven't taken a checkride in the aircraft, chances are that you may not log SIC.

ok time to post this again.

We had a turban in my office in my first charter company. Whenever anyone complained of not "getting enough turbine time" we made them wear it.

"OK Go ahead and start your stop watch - log all ya want!"

So essentially I am asking if anyone here knows if I can find some cheap turbine time in the austin area just for fun every once in a while.

You might check with ACA. I think that we have some Jetstream 41s that we'd like to get rid of. I heard that it is actually costing us money to park them.

Just tell them that Glenn Tilton sent you.
