TSA requirements

i didn't even know about these until last week. apparently they only apply to new students (not CFI/CFII/MEI students) and then I as the instructor also have to do training every so often??

the endorsment for the student stating you have seen their passport or birth certificate is very interesting, especially when the certificate is notorized but doesn't have a number on it.

any thoughts from my fellow instructors out there?

i wish i was taught these requirements in CFI/CFII groundschools rather than my first week on the job

The logbook endorsement is something AOPA has pulled out of their ass. It isn't necessary. Just get the proof of citizenship and keep a copy on file and you're fine.

i need a copy for my records or just the flight school needs a copy?

Although the logbook endorsement is not required it can be useful as the TSA allowed some relief in the regulations by issuing this letter.
I believe this is still valid unless someone knows otherwise....

What records does a flight school, have to maintain for US citizens or nationals?
Under 49 CFR 1552.3(i)(iv), a flight school is required to maintain a copy of documentation establishing that a flight student is a US citizen or national for five years. However, TSA is granting an exemption to that provision for flight schools that provide flight training on any size aircraft, provided that the flight school: (1) continues to determine whether a flight student is a US citizen or national in accordance with 49 CFR 1552.3(h) prior to providing flight training to the student; and (2) makes the following endorsement in the logbook, or other record used by the instructor to record flight student endorsements “I certify that [insert student’s full name] has presented to me a [insert type of document presented, such as US birth certificate or US passport, and the relevant control or sequential number on the document, if any] establishing that [he or she] is a US citizen or national in accordance with 49 CFR 1552.3(h). [Insert date and instructor’s signature and CFI number.]”

so i didn't need to put the one in HIS logbook, but i do need one for MINE (my records)

I wouldn't put squat in anyone's logbook. I'd keep the documentation entirely seperate, and when the 5 year mark came around, the whole pile would get dropped in the shredder, the shreds burned, and the ashes mailed to the TSA.

SWEET!!!!!!!:nana2: :nana2:

If you trust your flight school to keep good records, I wouldn't bother keeping anything for yourself.
