TSA is over steppin its bounds

TSA across the board is not organized and consistent. I know for a fact that at T3 and T4 at JFK, crew bags just get looked at for obvious threats; they wouldn't take away your water, toothpaste, shampoo, etc... But what sucks is that it's not like that across the board, and that's the sad truth. I can only speak for what I know. By the way I am a screener at JFK; but not a G.E.D candidate. I like many of the coworkers that I know, are college grads and I'm not just talking about a bachelors. Believe you me, I hate my job as much as the majority of the the flying public hates me for doing my job....but I'm just here because it's paying for school.

Don't get mad at the agents in the airports, they are only following the rules that were given to them. How would you know what level of education they have achieved? At some airlines all you need is a high school diploma to be a pilot on a jet. [/quote]
But at an airline you have already proven you did more than just get a high school diploma otherwise you wouldnt be at said airline. :panic::banghead:
Now will I very much agree the screeners have a variety of back grounds. Also more than a couple are way beyond a high school education, but I reserve certain rights because I went through the training to be a TSA and I know for a fact that they recieve very little training and that the majority have a chip on their shoulders because they believe they are police officers. I have seen them rake people over the coals for a lighter because they were frustrated probably.
My point remains that I am very much oppose to the TSA giving flight crews the probe when they are not the ones doing anything wrong. Does this sound arrogant? yes. Should I just take it like a man and let them touch my underwear? yes Will I lay down and die? HECK NO!!!!!

PistolPak1, I agree that flight crews should have different rules. Have you talked to your union about it? I have expressed my concerns to my representative and they agree something needs to be done. They are currently working on a program which is somewhat similar to CASS to get through TSA screening quicker. Until those rules are implemented just go with the flow. They have a job to do and so do you. Act like a professional pilot. So what if 3-4 mins of your time is spent going through screening?

I'm not the best at math, but lets take a look at this...a 764 holds about 277 people. Multiply that times 2 and you get 554 minutes, divide that by 60 and you get 9.23 hrs. of interviews. For just one flight. Multiply that by however many flights operate out of an ATL or a JFK type airport and one can see that it is just not practical to use that as a method of screening.

You could do this as part of the check in process. It usually takes two to three minutes to check in, somtimes longer if you have a lot of bags to chck. Another one or two minutes per person wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Plus I have had to wait a heck of a lot longer than 1 or 2 minutes to go through a security checkpoint at airports big and small accross the US.

Anybody know someone who froze their drink solid to go through security? :D

There should be cups like the ones that say "take a penny, leave a penny" but with clippers and shampoos so you don't carry anything on board :D or maybe leave the clothes, take the clothes....hmm, somewhat interesting but....well... maybe not... :D or maybe in Europe

Keep in mind that is something goes down TSA is going to be the first ones to be blamed. People think TSA is only the people you see at security checkpoints. You have no clue how big TSA is and what goes on behind the scenes. Those are just baggage checkers or whatever their proper title is. That is probably the smallest part of TSA.

I understand that you might get annoyed at times but I would honestly think about everything before you start to bash.

The biggest difference I see between the two systems? In the US they go after nail clippers, in Israel they go after terrorists.

Well, while I admire the Israeli approach to airport security, I do have to say that they're a small country with less flights in a year than any network carrier does in a week. So we can't adopt all of their tactics but we certainly ought to go after actions, not items.

If your spelling, punctuation and grammar are at less than the high school level, you shouldn't try to use them to berate someone for having less than a high school education.

Just a thought.

I know I am probably going to make people mad with my view on this and I apologize ahead of time.

With all due respect, as an Israeli who knows something about security/airline security, all I can tell you is that the problem (here, in the US) starts and ends with the people and the constitution. People here are too damn worried about their freakin privacy and most poeple believe that whatever the government/TSA "sells" them is as good as the bible. Well, it is not. Airport security is a big joke. In today's day and age there is not so much room for privacy that the constitution provided us 200 years ago. It is absolutely insane that profiling cannot be used in airports because it violates their privacy. It is absolutely insane that you treat 75 years old couple as if they were Bin Laden. It is a big waste of time, and a big show-off, that you take an 8 oz after shave bottle from an airline pilot, that is filled with only 1oz of after shave, and you can see through the transparent bottle that there is nothing there besides a tiny small amount of after shave, just becuase the "rules" says 3 oz max. It's a joke and it does not work. period.
When people will realize that it's time to give up a little of their "privacy" for a better, real security like the Israelis do, then US airports will be safe.
Lack of common sense is the biggest enemy of life. Unfortunately lack of common sense is practiced daily by the TSA.

The point that I was trying to make is that the TSA spends too much time going after nail clippers and shampoo bottles instead of going after the terrorists. Does it really make sense to strip search an 80 year old grandma in a wheelchair while someone who looks like Osama Bin Laden sails right through security?

I realize we might not be able to adopt all of the tactics that the Israelis use. However, if the TSA could apply a minimal amount of common sense, I think that would make a world of difference.

I think TSA is totally worthless. If they ever thwart a terrorist attack I think it would be due more to dumb luck (and a dumb terrorist - pun intended) than anything else.

Just watch them at work. Whoever said that they were just collecting nail files, toothpaste, and gels has it dead on.

Here's some humorous (and stupid) examples of things that have happened to me:

1. When the restrictions came down on bringing liquids onto aircraft an exception was made for baby formula. On one of my flights a mother had to dump out the sippy cup full of water for her baby because it was NOT baby formula. Outstanding detective work! That should be good for a "junior G-man badge"! Were it not for the TSA my aircraft might have been brought down by said sippy cup full of water. Whew! Close one!!! Thank God for the TSA!

2. I once had a TSA employee at Newark tell me that I needed a boarding pass to pass through screening. I was in uniform, carrying a flight case, and had proper ID and she was still insistent that I present a boarding pass. It was only after we spent a few minutes explaining to her that we sit up front with the BIG windows and the steering wheel that she let us through.

Watch this, it's funny and meant to be a joke but it's really not a joke at all. It's the truth:

The biggest difference is that the Israelis are allowed to profile the passengers.

I have a feeling that you are wrong. I am about 99% sure that the second you walk in the doors at the airport you are open game to be profiled, searched just because, etc. A friend of mine will know the answer to this question so once I talk to him I will let you know. Like I said, I could be the one wrong here but I don't think so.

Sorry to do this, as this quote since 9/11 has been used rampantly both on here and IRL.

But it made sense then and still does today.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Our forefathers besides talking out of both sides of their mouth, about all men being free and equal, yet owning slaves. Were ahead of their times. Lets not be in such a rush to further shred our constitution!

Thank you!

And in plain English...?!
