TSA/FAA rank stupidity.....

OMG.....it doesn't get any better than this.

As most people know, where I fly out of at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, the German Air Force also trains their Tornado jet pilots. One of the German AF pilots here also owns a German-registered glider, which he bases from the local Alamogordo airport, located 5 miles from Holloman AFB. He is a member of the White Sands Soaring Club, however has been barred from flying his foreign-registered glider by the FAA due to the "proximity to an active military base," with the implication of homeland security considerations (other gliders routinely fly out of the civil airport). He has sent a letter to the FAA stating, in part:

"As my normal duty, I make a takeoff three times a week from a US military installation, Holloman AFB in specific. I am flying a "foreign" (to you) supersonic jet fighter, loaded to it's maximum capacity with explosives and bullets. I fly this jet over most of the southwestern states as a normal part of my job.

If I had any desire to hurt you or your country, I would not use my glider. Thank you for your consideration."

That has got to be the most idiotic thing I've ever heard of!

The TSA is a worthless waste of money and should be dissolved!

Can't wait to hear the tap dance the TSA sends in response to this one, if they even bother to reply.

Tell your friend to DUCK!

I suspect that the TSA will, in character, over react to this. Keep us posted.

Yeah this is like the TSA guys who give airline pilots extra screening, and then tell them they want to make sure they can't take over the plane, or the guys who take the airline pilot's nail clippers, but have no problem letting him have access to a fire axe in the cockpit or let him carry a load firearm onto the plane.

Anyway, I suspect that the FAA won't make an issue of it, but the TSA is probably going to investigate why some foreign national is given access to military aircraft. I suspect that the FBI might show up on this guy's doorstep and want to know where he gets these armed aircraft if he's not in the military...there will probably be a delicious moment when he tells them to go back where they came from and explain the word (I'm assuming) "Joint Operation" to their bosses.

You friend should also have pointed out that the last military aircraft to attack a target in the United States was a USANG pilot shooting up a school.

Can the TSA get any dumber? What am I saying...of course they can.

Naunga

Just when you think that the TSA can't get any dumber.....

They're proving H.L. Mencken and P.T. Barnum right every single day!

I think it's an insult that pilots even go through security. If I want to hijack an aircraft, I'm not going to use a box cutter....

The TSA and FAA with all their wisdom may look at this and say "Wow this guy is right about flying a foreign jet fully loaded... We should restrict him from doing that too." When will the madness end with these guys? Oh wait, I guess it wont.

The two agencies should try that, then have the wrath of the DOD come down upon them.
