TSA clearance??????

I just tried to sign up with ATP today and they're requiring me to go thru the TSA thing. If I have a previous pilot's licsence...do I have to go through this? I know they're just following orders from FAA so i'm not questioning ATP. The thing that kinda bugs me is that is like getting a military clearance all over again. It took me 2 years to get a top secret military clearance because I lived in asia......The akward thing is they're having me register under a foreign/alien sign up area despite being an american citizen. Kinda makes me feel violated in some way.

If you are a US citizen, you only need to show a proof of that citizenship to statify the TSA requirements (this is not an FAA thing, but the FAA says we must follow whatever the TSA requires now). So, a passport is easy. A birth certificate and photo ID also works. Beyond that, there are a few other goverment issued options. A driver license alone is not proof of citizenship though.

If ATP is screwing up, and requiring you to do the paperwork as though you are not a citizen, then you'll soon be paying an extra $130 and do some fingerprinting you don't have to do. As well as giving your place of birth, all places lived in the last 5 years, and a bunch of other useless stuff.

Somebody made a mistake, just as the previous said, if you are a US Citizen, all you have to do is show your US Passport, OR, your US Birth Certifcate with the raised seal & a photo ID issued by the government such as a state issued drivers license.

As a naturalized citizen all I had to do was present a photocopy of my Form N-550 to satisfy TSA requirements. Perhaps you can see if they will accept that as an option?

If you have a US passport and a US pilots license, someone isn't following procedure or is being too careful. If passport or pilots license are not US, the procedure can take awhile. Thank the TSA, part of the wonderful Homeland Security gang.

In response to this question ... yes. When a pilot goes to obtain a new certificate/rating, they have to go through this process. Last time I checked though, it's not required for recurrent stuff like a Flight Review or IPC. Not sure about other endorsements (tailwheel, high performance, complex, etc).

Does anyone know how long does it take to get a clearance?
and can you start training while that is being process?

Another question, Let's say I'm going to start my commercial training and go through the prosess.
them when I start doing the CFI rating do I have to go through the whole thing again?

Know what you mean. I just had to pay $95 for a TSA background check in order to renew my HAZMAT endorsement on my Commercial Driver's License! New reg apparently. Forget the fact that I have security clearances up the wazoo simply due to my job, that wasn't good enough for them......
