Is the trim tab a flight control system according to the NTSB. Here is the scenario, flying along and the trim wheel goes slack, no binding and the aircraft is in reasonable trim. Would this meet the need for immediate notification of the NTSB?
Great question. This happened to me back in 2007 but the plane was trimmed to a nose up attitude. I had to fly back to the FBO (about 15 minutes) with my arms locked holding the yoke forward. My instructor didn't offer to relieve me once saying "what would you do if I weren't here". We made it back without incident and as I recall, nothing was ever reported to the FAA.
First, it is NTSB, not FAA (in response to diverdriver).
Which is worse, not reporting it and getting it found out later in an audit by FAA (NTSB does not do audits) or reporting it and it not being required to?
