Hey there I tried my hand at running a flight plan. How does it look? I put in a takeoff alternate due to the marginal wx at CID

Well, I’ll touch on the takeoff alternate.

Marginal weather is usually within 100ft or 1/2sm of minimums. I am showing CID at 4sm and OVC009 which may or may not be what you planned it with, I don’t know. But given those conditions, a takeoff alternate is unnecessary as they should have no issues returning to CID. Also, in a situation where one would need to use a takeoff alternate, chances are that there is an emergency, so specific routing need not apply. Go direct, unless of course there is a complex special approach or weather or something of the like in the way.

When i planned it the wx was ovc015 and i knew the ils went lower than that but the taf was trending lower each line so thats why i planned the alternate.

Real life scenario: SEASFO flight, just after sunrise departure, METAR had a 1 point temp dew point spread, with a sct001 in the TAF 10SM. I gave them PSC as a TO alt. Giving a to alt is no big deal. But I would not give one unless I really suspected wx might drop below cat 1 mins.

I'm with Luigi ..

Has anyone ever had anything divert to it's take off alternate? Our crews always laughed at our take off alternates. The comments were always if I loose an engine or I'm on fire I'm landing where I came from even if it's below mins!

Really? Unless you consider a crash site a landing....you do what’s safe. Whether you loose, or lose an engine (where do they go anyhow?) you do what’s safe. Additionally, a Dispatcher has ZERO role if that happens. Just saying......

Agreed. But the TO alt is for planning and legality purposes. I think from a crew standpoint it’s good to know the dispatcher has thought of it, and having the weather and NOTAMs at hand and readily available is nice.
