Late 20s. So I'd most likely be looking at 145 LGA to start. I'd actually prefer the 145 for the higher bonus, but if for some odd reason 175 DFW was available, I'd take it in a heart beat. 145 DFW would be even better....I don't buy into the whole must fly a 175 or else craze....otherwise compass and republic would be at the top of my list.
Ah yes, I forgot about the greater bonus for the 145 and CRJ. At late 20s you'd likely be near the bottom of the class, although I can't say for sure, especially since I'm not at Envoy.
The "must fly the 175" thing is silly, although aren't the 145 and CRJ fleets shrinking? Then again I don't believe Envoy is adding 175s anymore, at least for now, so you might not get off reserve any faster on the 175.
One advantage of the 175 is that it is newer, and a disadvantage of 50-seat jets is they are less economical (when oil prices were higher I know some airlines were planning on dropping them from their regional feed fleets), so 50-seaters will likely be retired sooner. So I could see the advantage of going to an all-68-76 seat regional for that reason, but if you go to Envoy your company-wide seniority will be the same no matter which type you get. That's something that worries me about my employer; we are transitioning to an all-145 fleet and I do not think 145s will be profitable once oil gets expensive again. In 2013 I believe, our mainline partner stated they planned to completely eliminate 50-seat jets from their regional brand. Since then low oil prices have granted them a stay of execution, but oil prices will revert to the mean sooner or later.
So? There was a time regionals had 8 year FOs on RJs.
If you're 22-23 today 8 years means 30 or 31. That's a great age for AA (or any legacy). Worse case at Envoy, you upgrade quick and get your apps out to DL, UA, SW, or AS.
Doesn't ASA/ XJT still have 8+ year FOs? And that was the norm rather than the exception only a few years ago. It probably will be again before long- it's been nearly 8 years since the last recession so we're just about due for another one.
And you wouldn't necessarily even need to upgrade before applying at most of those majors; many of them do not require TPIC, and you could just as easily apply to them from Envoy as from a regional without a flow. Although since according to that other thread upgrade at Envoy is now 3 months, you would probably upgrade quickly anyway.
Also 8 years happens to be what the flow is now. Not too long ago it was more like 20 years. It could be completely different for those who are hired at Envoy now. And as pessimistic as I generally am about the future of our profession, I could see it dropping even more as American has quite a few retirements coming up over the next decade.
